In response to a readers query the June issue of Forza reports that they were told by Ferrari's licensing department that Ferrari has renewd it's a greement with Mattel Hot Wheels.

This is bad news for those of us who have been hoping for high quality 1/18th Ferrari replicas from the likes of Auto Art or Exoto.

No word on how this might affect the release this fall of the eagerly awaited 250GT SWB from CMC GMbH.

    Hello Andy,

I had the same concern about CMC so I wrote directly to them and here's their answer:

    Dear Alan,

"It`s right that Matell is the major licencee of Ferrari, but we had the luck that we was able to make business with Ferrari directly without Matell. That means that we will have absolutely no problem with that model regarding any licence problems".

So relax, their should not be a problem for those of us that find the models from CMC so desirable.

I suppose Mattel has the exclusive rights in a certain scale (1:18) and a certain price range. Other than that, other manufacturers are, provided they´ve obtained their own license, allowed to come out with Ferrarimodels.

So it means that the likes of Bburago, Polistil and Maisto are not allowed to come out with 1:18 Ferrari-models and I don´t experience that as being any kind of a problem.

Exactly... No complaints from me, either. I can't wait for the CMCs, BTW.

If you say so but I'd prefer a Bburago or even a Maisto to the Ferraris that Hot Wheels puts out (some are just recycled Bburagos!)

Maisto rules! just look at the attention to detail in SLR,Gallardo, Carrera GT etc.
of course we're talking about $25-30 Dlls. here
more expensive ones make no sense to me.

Auto Art is better, especially in the case of the Gallardo. As long as they have rights to Lambo, I'm a happy.

Hold on a sec. Isn't Mattel producing a more finely detailed Hot Wheels line to compete with the likes of AutoArt and the others priced effectively the same? I'm almost 100% I've seen it discussed on here before, but I know I've seen them listed on a few model sites. Tell me I'm wrong if i am.

Well, its easy for me to say. I don´t care for the shoppingmall 1:18´s, but I find (the more recent) Hotwheels every bit as acceptable as Bburago´s were.

I agree, Maisto makes decent cars, sometimes pretty good actually. But sometimes they also make little mistakes that can spoil a model that is almost perfect. For example, see the rear rims/tyres and the color of the grill on the Maisto Murcielago. I mean, if they want to make it look real, why spoil it by just a little detail which could easily be solved if they had paid a little more attention?

I just bought a 1/18 250LM from Mattel and compared it to my 250LM from Bburago and the result is quite interesting: They both are flawed, but in different spots: E.g. Bburago has the whole engine/tranny chromed and no door windows. OTOH Mattel lacks the front turn signals.

In general I find the Mattel models of better quality than the Bburagos, but this whole comparison discussion is a bit pointless: What we really need are more models. Still waiting for all those 2+2 to come out (GT4, 400i, Mondial)!

I have serveral of they're Ferrari Models. I don't have a problem with them. sure there are flaws and inaccuracies, but they are $30 models. I don't demand perfection at that price.
Bburago has disappointed me too many times. I will NEVER buy a model from them. They have too many flaws. to many things that make the models not look quite right. I don't get the satisfaction of having a nice model. Maybe its just me.

I currently have 2 enzo's (red and yellow, i'm bidding on a white one)
I have a 612 scag, 360CS. I have a green murci on the way as well as a red f40 and a 250LM. I plan on getting a black enzo and then another one that i will respray blue to complete the collection. I also plan on getting a F50 shortly as well as a california spyder. a couple 355s and a 360 spyder will probabaly be bought this summer of fall.
I love them. Go Hot Wheels!
