    Carbon,

Thanks for this recap of the numbers. I will keep it at hand for future reference. Can you check your 330 GTS figures. I believe they made 100 of them [you mentioned 37]. I don't have any basis for my claim......just what I have been told over the years.

Learned a lesson on that one......if u want it move fast.......especially rare vintage.

    Carbon,

Great work. Regarding the 328, the serial numbers suggest it was introduced in spider form. Do you know this to be true? I always thought the berlinettas were introduced first, followed by the spider in just about every model.

Furmano, that's right. In most cases, the berlinetta is introduced first, then a spyder (or spider) follows. But such is not the case with the 328, or the 275 (first 275 GTS is 6001, first 275 GTB is 6003). The first 348 GTS (not to be confused with the first 348 ts) is 96826, as per Keith Bluemel; and 96937 is the first 348 GTB, also as per Bluemel. Maybe someone here knows why.

    First serial number: 18317.
    Last serial number: 34503 (?).

total production is actually 2,897, of which 2,185 are steel, and 712 are glass cars (or the 808 that Ferrari claims). Production of glass cars ended in 1977 with serial #21289, overlapping the beginning of steel car production which began in 1976 with serial #19367, hence both body types were built side by side for a time.

Great post, thanks for taking the time and effort.

John... Thank you very much. Is there any chance you can break that down, or add in some punctuation...? As it stands, the way it's copied and pasted is a bit obscure and I'm not sure what I'm reading.

    Hi Carbon

Sorry, the data was copied from an Excel spreadsheet and the spacing looked good in the preview but got lost when posted.

    Let's try it this way:

For the 400i, the data is production for each year by row, with the first number being the number of automatics, the second the number of 5 speeds and the third number the total production of 400i for that year. The series total then is summarized as 884 automatics, 424 5 speeds, and a total of 1,308 produced. Note that some sources show 1,306 but I think that the numbers here, which are from the first Ferrarisima series, are correct because they break down the production by year, including the last 14 cars produced in January and February of 1985 before they switched over to production of the 412.

There is a disagreement on what was the first serial number of the injected 400i series. FML says it was 27075 while Cavallino says that it was 27978. I would tend to agree with FML, since I have seen a report of an auction sale of 400i s/n 27385, indicating that the Cavallino serial number isn't the first one.

The data on the 400 production compares two sources, one the Automobilia book "Ferrari 412" by Paolo Murani and Stefano Pasini, which said that there were 500 of the series produced (355 autos and 145 5 speeds); and Ferrari Market Letter, which says that there were 501 cars produced (354 autos and 147 5 speeds).

Lastly, the 412 data is from FML (V27, No. 11) of June 1, 2002, which said that there were 270 5 speeds and 306 automatics for a total run of 576 cars in the series.

    Carbon,

You've missed a digit off the RHD 348 ts figure. It should be 261 not 26!!!!

Also, as previously discussed the last 328 GTS was 83136 - a Swiss-delivered car originally, but in the UK last I heard of it (about a year ago).

512 TR: There were 88 UK RHD cars. That is 50 non-ABS plus 38 with ABS. Incidentally, care needs to be taken with RHD numbers as Maranello Concessionaires in the UK have published booklets over the years with numbers. However, there can sometimes be confusion between UK RHD and total RHD (i.e. including cars for all RHD markets: UK, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brunei, Thailand, etc.)

I don't have a copy of Cavallino immediately to hand, but if it does say 27978 it is clearly wrong as all 400i series cars would have odd-numbered serials.

Great catch! I didn't even focus on the even serial number aspect. Checking Cavallino 138 (December 2003/January 2004) shows that they did show the beginning serial number incorrectly as 27978 (page 52). Tsk! Tsk!

    John

PS And guess what? Still showed incorrectly as of current issue 164!!!
