Ferrari Sales brochure: reference numbers? Rates?

Publication Numbering

The first books on Ferrari literature were published by Richard C. Merritt in 1976. FERRARI: Brochures and Sales Literature - A Source Book 1946-1967 contained black and white pictures of most of the known brochures through 1967. In addition, information about the sizes, styles and color were given. Most of the older brochures are known by their 'Merritt' number, i.e. the first page in this book where the brochure was printed. FERRARI: Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbooks 1948-1963 contained black and white pictures of the owner's manuals (some with parts too). Both books are long out of print, but have been reprinted by VelocePress (www.velocepress.com).

The second book is by Randall C. Baselt, published in 1991. FERRARI: Brochures and Sales Literature - A Source Book 1968-1989 is a continuation of Merritt's brochure book. Formatted similarly but with smaller pictures, it contains most known sales literature through 1989. In addition, it has a list of all known early (pre-1965) sales brochures including several not published in the earlier Merritt book. Another list of numbered Ferrari publications is also included.

In 1965, Ferrari started numbering their literature. The format is nn/yy where nn started with 01 for the first publication and yy is the last two digits of the publication year. So the first numbered publication is 01/65, 275 GTB/275GTS Owner's Manual. This numbering scheme continues today with 2003 yearbook being numbered 1991/03. Not all publications received a number. Further, Ferrari would reprint an item, using the same initial number, but changing the year to the current one. An example is 14/66, 330 GTS Sales Brochure. It was reprinted in 1967 using the number 14/67. For some publications, Ferrari would also have the number printed, usually in millions. An example is 1124/96, 550 Maranello sheet with a print count of 1.5M/9/96. So this was printed in September 1996 in a quantity of 1½ million copies. Here's a typical print information area. The publisher and city are on the left. The publication number (562/89) is next. On the right is the number printed along with the month and year (9M/12/89).

A book published in 1983 edited by David Moe is different than the Merritt books. The Ferrari Library contains a list of factory literature from 1950 to 1983. It also contains lists of books, magazines with Ferrari articles, parts manuals, body parts manuals, repair manuals and owner's manuals. Most of these manuals were never numbered by Ferrari when they were published. A second edition was published in 1989.

The latest book on Ferrari literature is by Michel Sauze, published in 1997. Ferrari - 50 years of factory publications covers all publications through 1996. Unlike Merritt's and Baselt's books, this does not contain pictures, but has lists of known publication with cross references by car type, postcards and posters. Sauze has numbered each entry which does not have a Ferrari number in the form of yy/nn, where yy is the year of publication and nn starts with 01 each year. If applicable, the Merritt number is also supplied.

Kerry has done a great job in detailing sources for Ferrari print numbers.
If I can correct one thing - the quantity is NOT in millions; it is in 'mille' = thousands. Therefore 1.5M = 1,500 only, NOT 1½ million copies.

Nathan, thanks for the correction. Obvious, but my computer background has M for Mega or million. Just didn't think that the quantities in the millions were much too large for Ferrari.

I'm almost certain that Ferrari started putting the print #s on literature in 1966. Not any earlier. I believe the first piece of literature with a factory print number was in 1966.

that's an interesting question. The earliest # that I've actually seen is 06/66, and as the lists that I have seen all have 06/66 correct I presumed that they also had 01/65 - 05/66 correct. I'll do some more research.
What do you think was the earliest # to actually appear printed on a piece of literature?

Because I've found this on Ebay with following desciption:
The factory catalogue number, N.10/63 is printed on the last inner page, and must relate to the first draft document in 1963, prior to the car being completed.

Being a fairly $$$ ($800) item and a serious seller I presumed the info accurate, but I'll ask him to be sure.

Hi All,
I can confirm that the first print number is 01/65 for the manual/handbook 275 GTB/GTS which I have in my collection. But I heard some rumours that the very first number should be 00/65?!?! Does anybody know something about this?
By the way, it is very difficult to collect Ferrari factory literature because there is many factory literature which has no print number and was printed after 1965?!
If anybody needs some support in this subject, please contact me. I have experience for over 20 years and would be pleased to help or support.

I just got this answer from the seller:
Hello Jurgen, I have just checked my book and it definitely has N.10/63 on the last printed inner page.
I have always believed that thise book, with the plain green cover, was a later 1966 updated reprint by Ferrari and they did not bother to have the shiny covers added.
[size=+2]Can you tell me what the cover on 10/66 would be like?[/size]
My book certainly dates from 1966, because there are all the variants pages at the back for cars up to December 65.
The only other very early numbers that I have are 1/65 for 275 handbook and 16/67 for 330GTC parts book, so 10/66 would fit better into the sequence.
I cannot think of an exact reason for the difference in numbers: misprint, prototype issue, or deliberate change by Ferrari, all could be possible!!
