If nobody objects I thought I'd keep a running build thread here of my next sculpture to be shown at the 2011 Cavallino Classic. It's kind of cool to see it progress thru the weeks and what's involved in the process. Hopefully by updating this thread I'll be forced to remember to take pictures more often.

Right now I'm still roughing in the buck shape out of oak. This part of the process can be very tedious but it's crucial to have an accurate "guide" for when I begin to shape the aluminum. The 1/4 scale shape is close but still needs refinement.

I'm doing it a little bit different this time by making a solid shape first instead of the typical "skeleton" structure. Once the shape is dead on I can go back and decide what to keep and remove so that it is more of a framework than a solid plug.

Very cool. Looking forward to following the progress, and then seeing the finished product in person at Cavallino.

I had the pleasure of viewing your work in person, and I am looking forward to seeing this project finished. I'm always fascinated by the "in-progress" shots of a project like this, keep them coming!

Nice! are you using this as a mold for press molding with softened aluminum?

    Thanks guys.

The form is used as a buck to check my aluminum work as I form it by hand using various hammers, dollies, etc. and with the english wheel. I don't press form or hammerform anything. My goal is to try and make the sculptures in almost the same way as the full size cars to try and capture the essence of the process and the car's soul.

It would be awesome to see a carving like that in Bloodwood. Being a woodworker, (and I used to sell exotic wood) I love to see art made of wood instead of just the stand or frame.

Well after a little more finessing I have my buck close enough to begin the aluminum. There are a couple areas that still need refining but I'm eager to start forming. I always revisit each stage as the process goes along rather than work linearly. It's more a constant state of evolution than a progression.

Heck, if all else fails I could just sell the wood pieces or start a career as an ice carver! ;)

    Anthony, great work.

How do you check the symmetry of the wood buck as you are carving the wood? Did you make gages to measure the sections at different places on the wood?

Thanks again everyone for the kind words. It really motivates me to not disappoint you guys come January! :)

For the most part I still eye ball everything and follow my gut. For crucial details I have indexing gauges to check for alignment but I wouldn't say the work is spot on symmetrical.

The reason being I'm trying to capture the same essence as the original coachbuilders so I shoot for subtle discrepancies here and there. I think your subconscious picks up on the hand made nature of the process and not being numerically perfect in every detail adds to the experience much the same way as the original cars.

I think part of the allure and lasting beauty of these classics is that they were made by true artisans and not cnc machines. The entire process is a lost art. Perhaps this is why they are still so unique even today. I go out of my way to do a lot of my work by hand to avoid the "soulless" feel that cnc can have. It would save an incredible amount of time if I just modeled the data in Alias and then have my buck machined on a 5 axis router but I think it would defeat my goal. I especially like to leave the metal work rough and unfinished in many areas. Hammer marks, raw welds and all.

Thanks! I'm not sure I deserve such praise but it motivates me to push harder and reach higher.

Forgive me if this is out of line but for those of you who appreciate my work and would like to see even more please take the time to stop by the AFAS tent at Pebble Beach and let them know you'd like to see my work in their show next year.

I'm pushing hard to take my art full time and getting accepted into the AFAS is a major step to success. They have exclusive deals with Pebble Beach and Amelia. Between those two shows plus Cavallino I would gain a lot of marketing exposure that you just can't buy. Most of the members are already familiar with myself and my work. Maybe a little buzz from my fellow FChatters to Ken Eberts and the others will influence them in a positive way.

If anything I'll buy you a beer if you suggest they give me a chance! ;)

Thanks for starting this thread...going to be fun.

its interesting to look at the basic shape in the wood mockup as it shows how beautiful the simplicity of form was on the classic cars.
