What is the deal with the yellow Ferrari shields I see on so many Dinos? I understood that the cars never had any Ferrari badging, yet it seems most of the cars I see for sale have the sticker on. Personally, I like the way they look, but is it in any way "correct" ? Is it heresy to mount one, and if not, where do you get them?

dino's never had them. you can get them at the dealerships in two sizes. you can also find them on ebay. there are also magnetic version that can be placed and removed more easily

I find them ridiculous on non-racing Ferraris. On a Dino, they look twice ridiculous to me.

That being said, I have seen pictures of Sergio Pininfarina's personal silver Dino 206; it had shields.

i agree, i think they look silly on the dino. my 360 has them from the factory, and i like them. but i also agree, they look best on the vintage racers

The shields offer another way to get a "horsey" badge on your car so that everyone around you knows you're in a Ferrari. Very important.

contrary to what is always said, the horsey badge does appear on several parts of the car, just not the exterior body. and besides, why would you put the horsey badge on the front fender so it's ass is facing the driver?

No yellow horsey badges, then. As to why you'd want the back end facing you, ever stand in front of an Italian Stallion?

just to illuminate me, where on a truly stock Dino would the cavallino have appeared? I can think of two; the info plate on the back edge of the driver door (would that have been on US models only?) and on the telaio plate.

    Any others?

Feel free to put any badges you wish anywhere you can. It's your car, It can be restored to original anytime you want (even if you have holes to fill).

The continuous cacophony of "what kind of car is that" or the even better "is that a kit car?" should be enough to decide.

this goes back to that age old question, "if you have to ask......"

why don't all of us dino owners but a sticker on the back that says, " my dick is bigger than a 70's corvette owner". that is about as tasteful as we can get.

Practicality led me to put Ferrari on left rear panel opposing DinoGT on the right. Mine is a daily driver and the "kit car" question in parking lots, 4 times a day, finally got to me. It worked. Now I get answerable questions and lots of kids know what a Ferrari really looks like.

If you only drive on weekends and only go to upscale parking lots, leave it off. If you use the car as it was designed (go anywhere, do anything), let the plain folks know what it is. Make a lot of friends that way. Those who know will forgive you; or they are not worth worrying about.

Hey, just a tidbit of info. here: A fellow told me that "Dino" in Italian means "little horsey." So put 2 and 2 together, and it's basically a Ferrari.

Well, it was designed without a Ferrari script, so if you want to use the car as it was designed...

The way I see it, there's more than enough Ferrari racing DNA in the Dino to justify the Scuderia emblem if the owner chooses to display it.

Yes, and I'm certain that's the reason that owners are proudly pasting the horsey on the side of the car.

You'd drive it, enjoy it, maintain it, and not care if it had any Ferrari badges/shields on the outside or not.

Otherwise, you'd never use any oil other than the "period correct" Shell oil that was in it, you'd never use unleaded fuel, you'd only use 20+ year old original Michelin XWXs and not Coker versions or any other substitute, and you'd only wax it with, what, Turtle Wax?

In general, I'm with JC on this one. Just because I'm not going to put a Ferrari badge or shield on the outside of my GTS doesn't mean I'd snicker at someone who did it to their own.

My car once had SF shields on the front fenders... they were removed long ago and there is no other non-original badging currently on the car.

I simply don't know what the point of adding Ferrari badging is. When people ask what kind of car it is, I just tell them it's a Dino 246 GTS anyway. If they inquire further, I tell them about the Ferrari association.

Nobody's snickering. Just disapproving and disagreeing, which is what this board is also about.

And nobody's talking about using period correct spark plugs and such, or improving other invisible mechanical parts.

Putting a very visible Ferrari script, on the other hand, is at best a modification of the car's external appearance with a non-original script, at worst and unjustified misrepresentation. My Dino has TONS of Ferrari DNA; that doesn't make it a Ferrari. Furthermore, the person who decided that the Dino would be sold without horses or Ferrari scripts was a certain Enzo Ferrari; I think his choices are worthy of at least some respect.

A final commentary about the added scripts: The type and font of a Ferrari script stand out on the Dino like a sore thumb, clashing with the different font of the original "Dino GT" script.

By the way, I clock more than 10000 km/year on my GT, mostly up the mountains in Spain. As it was intended. And I care very much about confusing or misinforming those who see and admire it: I proudly tell them it's a Dino.

    Julio
