Should Ferrari/Maserati change their F1 paddle positions?

  1. Yes! Steering-column mounted paddles are awkwards when steering and shifting.

  2. No, I think it's perfect.

  3. Ferrari/Maserati should use buttons on the wheel, like Porsche's TipTronic.

  4. Ferrari/Maserati should use buttons behind the wheel, like Mercedes Benz.

I personally think that they should be attached to the steering wheel, rather than the steering column. Yes, during certain turns it may not be the best idea to shift, however, there are certain circumstances that one could benefit from shifting mid turn. You never know until you need it!!

At the risk of being castrated by this group, I vote for Ferrari replacing the F1 with a sequential gearbox like Porsche's tiptronic in the 911. The tip is so fast you don't even realize it has shifted. Who cares where the buttons are, just run the car in automatic mode. You just can't beat it, really.

I drive 360 manual, 575 F1, and Porsche with tip, and I rate them in that order for performance and practicality.

Perhaps there is an engineering downside to the tip, I just don't know of any. The tip is fast, less expensive and probably more reliable.

The Ferrari system can be made to shift in about 1/4th to 1/5th the amount of time but the testers felt it was not acceptable that way so it was slowed down intentionally.

I've got to add that I just took my 575 for a run, put it sport mode (have fiorano package), got on it on a long freeway onramp, and it was boatloads of fun. Sport mode shifting occurs over 7k, and had that drag-racing of the old days feel. Didn't chirp any tires, but maybe that is by design. 4th gear at end of onramp, 100mph or so, then hard on brakes down to 65. Sweeet ...
