Hello I really don't know where to post this but since I've done most of my posting in the 348/355 area I hope this thread will be appreciated here.

So a friend of mine has this Ferrari Sign which he brought back from the Ferrari Factory some time ago, it was damaged being shipped to his home and it's just been sitting in his garage. He asked me if I'd like to have it on display at my place and I said "Absolutely!" So it's a big sign, about 4-foot tall and about 2-foot wide and it was originally back lit so, my next project for this will be to shine some light behind it or possibly in front, need to experiment with that. So what I've done so far is clean the sign up and try to mend up the cracks as best I could. After that I made a frame, stained it and put some polyurethane on the wood work. I just hung it on a wall and I love how it looks, can't wait to light it. So I'm attaching some pictures of the work process and the finished product. It was a fun project as wood working is sort of a hobby of mine which I like messing around with on nights and weekends. If you have any questions please ask, if you like how it turned out I'd be happy to give more details on how I put it together, hope you like.

Great sign! I'm working on one for my garage...won't have raised letters as this one, this is great even with the crack.

    Nice save!

I'm wondering if LED or neon strips might actually be put to good use - on the interior's perimeter - to give it a soft or diffused inner light to avoid highlighting any leftover blemishes and give it a relatively crisp border...

Have some Chowder at the pier for me, will ya?

    wow! Fantastic work.

On a similar vein does anybody know where to get a cheap frame deep enough to display a steering wheel?

Very nice! Although a word of caution, having been through something similar before. When you light it from the back, the cracks are going to stand out like a sore thumb, especially if you used some sort of material to repair them. I ended up not being happy with the result, and decided I wasted my time, and left everything unlit. your mileage may vary, but figured I'd be devils advocate just in case. Good luck regardless, and post pics of the final result!

Thanks for the idea, I was thinking that might be a good way to cast a soft light in there, hopefully without exposing the cracks too much. Chowder sounds good and Splash Cafe in Pismo has some of the best for sure, there's also a Splash Cafe in San Luis Obispo but, that chowder seems to taste better by the beach.

There's a Michaels Craft Store out here that has a custom frame shop and a bunch of pre-made inexpensive ones, if you have one of those stores in your neck of the woods it's worth a look.

Thanks for the heads-up and advice. I've been thinking that back lighting would take away from the overall look so that's why I've been thinking of shining light on to it like you'd see in an art gallery. I'll just continue to tinker with it and see what looks best.

Question I have, how do you quote a bunch of people in one post???

Thanks again for all the compliments everybody.

One thing about plastic sign faces like this. The way to stop a crack is to drill a small hole at the very end of the crack. That will stop the crack from going any farther. This may or may not be advisable in your case.

Yes, yes, if I were doing the hands on work there it would be done already. I do hope to have an update for you early next week though. Have a great weekend.

Good tip. I got a shadow box for $30 with a black background that did now show off the steering wheel. I used an old vinyl roll up blind to cover the back in white. Came out pretty nice for the price!
