at Ed's service. He has had some health issues but seemed to be doing fine. The family still owns the property so hold your horses on the signs.
Oh wow I just saw that he passed when I read this post. Don't know how I missed it before. I am so sorry to hear this. He was always really nice to me
Charlie Kemp drove Can Am cars back when they were fire-breathing monsters. He actually won a Can-Am race in either a McLaren or a Porsche 917-30. He's also a member of the "Road Atlanta Flying Circus" along with Mark Donohue and at least one other guy. I talked to him on the phone a few times about repairing a Maserati Ghibli. Nice guy ... hope he is well.
Wow, this post sure brings back memories. In January 1987, I drove three hours from the Gulf Coast to Ferrari South to see my first Ferrari in person. Even though he knew I wasn't buying one, Dick Manning was so nice and gracious showing me all around. A Dr. Collins was just taking delivery of his new red Testarossa and Dick asked Ed if it would be okay for me to go back in the service area and take some pictures. Ed agreed and it was an experience I will never forget. I've often wondered what happened to Dick after FS closed, so I'm glad to hear he is doing well.
I sent an email to Dick not too long ago (last coupe of years) after going by the shop and seeing it looked abandoned - asked if the signs were for sale and was assured that they were not. I used to travel to Jackson a couple of times a month and remember when they were open and had cars there. The owner had a pretty impressive private collection and there were always some of his cars inside the service area, which you can view pretty easily from the parking lot through the garage windows. The only F-50 I've ever seen in the metal was inside, parked in plain view. I talked to Dick a couple of times over the years, but mostly went by when the shop was closed. It's been a couple of years since I went by, and it looked just like it's depicted in the more recent photos here. In any event, there don't seem to be any plans to sell the signage.
The last time I was there was probably 7-8 years ago. I told the guy (the name Wade sticks in my head??) that once I returned from Europe I planned to buy a Ferrari. He seriously had me thinking about going with a Testarossa over a 308. There were quite a few cars in there getting serviced. PDG
Over 8 year bump... Turns out my TR was initially delivered there. I was hunting for old records and came across its name. Sad its closed now
Hard to believe that I worked out a trade with them for a new 1978 Alfa spider for a 275 GTS with gearbox issues. Look at what the 275 is worth versus the Alfa.
My uncle in Jackson MS owned a Dino 246, blue... when new, ( I was away at college 76 thru 81 so I actually do not recall this car!), but this makes sense as he was not one to "save things" and he would tell the tale they cautioned him about running up such "high mileage"!! He must have been dealing with this local dealer at the time. He passed away a few years ago I certainly miss our frequent conversations.....
Ya'll made me go look! My grandmother lived on N. Congress, and I recall Fortification Street at the end of her block. It's gone now and "Under a Parking Garage, for The Hospital" as Uncle Charlie described it! Looking now that must be the Baptist Medical Center as my grandmother long worked as an RN. Vacations of course included the State Capitol and the close by sites. Ya'll can call this a "bad part of town" perhaps, but we were allowed to go "out the back gate" and I recall as a very young kid going down to the Jitney Jungle, for a candy bar!! I was born in '58, so this must have been the very early 60s, before a lot of innocence was lost, all across America...
According to Google Maps, this image is from April 2019. It's amazing that most of the Ferrari signs, including the one over the garage door, were still up! Image Unavailable, Please Login
I visited Ferrari South in October 2014, when my QV and I were in town for Euro-Fest in Ridgeland (great event, btw). Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
