With the return of Ferrari to Le Mans, I think it’s time to make a big historical thread about Ferrari in the World Sports Car Championship and also in the main non-championship races.

I will only post thumbnails, trying everytime to give the source for a bigger image. So, there will be no hypocrisy about copyrights and we will be able to move forward with this idea : no discussion without a period picture !

Hope you will like this new thread. Thanks for your interest ! ;)

Before starting the races (I will start with Agadir on 15 February in three days), let's take a look at the cars built during the winter of 1952-1953...;)

Ferrari built two almost identical cars during winter 1952-1953 : 0238/A for Severt Sundberg, Ornäs in Sweden and 0230/MM for Roberto Rossellini who was living in Roma (ITA), both with Vignale spyders bodies. First one had only 7 horizontal bars in the grill. Second 8 bars.

It should be noted that chassis number 0238 A was a 340 America Spider (4.1 liter), whereas chassis number 0230 MM was a 250 MM Spider (3 liter).
0238 A was completed three months earlier than 0230 MM.

Circuit de Vitesse d'Agadir took place 27 February 1953, not 15 February.

    Hi Marcel,
Many thanks for your comments. Regarding Agadir, date on poster is 15 February 1953. What makes you think it was on 27 February ?

FYI when I personally inspected this 166 MM/53 Coupé Vignale on 9 July 1990 at Dino Cognolato's Carrozzeria Nova Rinascente in Vigonza near Padova (for my upcoming book "Ferrari by Vignale") the car was wearing cassis number "0049 S" and NOT 0244 M............
(Yes, we all know that 0049 S is a 166 Inter Coupé GHIA, which was turned into a poor "Barchetta Touring REBODY" by Betz & Peters in CA/USA and which is now being brought back to original Coupé Ghia bodywork in Brazil. Pic below.)

FYI the Albergo Reale became Hotel Real Fini at Largo Garibaldi in Modena, pic below. This is where the pic with Sundberg and Tanner was taken.
Also, the end of 0238 A and Severt Sundberg 22 February 1953 in Burträsk. About one month after he had taken delivery. Sundberg had no right arm and therefore was nicknamed "Kroken" as he had lost the lower part of his right arm in a carpentry factory accident before WWII.

I get why you would start in 1953 but equally, why not start in '47? #playingdevilsadvocate

Supposedly the first motor race was held in 1894. That said it was a reliability trial won by Daimler powered Peugeot and Panhard et Levassour at 21km/h after the De Dion Bouton (and trailer, pictured below, what a way to travel!) that crossed the line first was disqualified for not meeting the entry requirements. It wasn't actually a race per se since the competitors stopped for leisurely lunch. The first timed race was the 1895 Paris-Bordeaux epic. Just thought Ferraris first sportscar race was '47 but philosophically the world sportscar championship has run since '53 so either have a great basis!

Great Timothy but please, respect the chronology. ;) I’m trying to follow real dates. Sebring was on 8 March 1953. Then let’s talk about this race on 8 March 2023 only ! :) Mille Miglia only in end of April...;)
If not, this thread will become a « More old photos » thread bis with tons of unsorted pics ! :D Thanks !
