My name is Mark and I have been a Ferrari fanatic for 30 years...

Got a problem and I need some advice. I've got a modified Porsche 944 turbo right now that's been one issue after another and I've never really gotten to enjoy it. The one track day I went to, made it about 15 laps before the head gasket blew. :( I really want a car I can drive and enjoy, no headaches.

So I found myself looking at a gorgeous 1979 930, limited modifications, only 23k miles for around $30k. A car I have always wanted, and wow what a driver. Then a little voice in my head says...

    "30k will get you a nice 308, 30k will get a nice 308, 30k nice 308, 30k 308!!!!"

Awww crap, now what do I do?

(wait a minute, I'm asking this on Ferrarichat? :D )

    Get the 308!
However, to track it you'd have to end up spending a little more.

The 308 will likely not be as fast, maybe not even as reliable, but it sure looks better than the 930 even when standing still. And then there is the long term value.

    Buy the Ferrari.

Also been a Porschefan for just as long, owned a bunch of them including just about every street model through the 80's. I really love 911s of all types, never owned a 930 though.

Siren call of the Ferrari is getting louder...

Have to be either an early carb car or a QV, just can't do the 2v FI model. Any leads?

Love the 308, but if you want a more or less reliable track car, get the Porsche. More reliable and easier and cheaper to fix.

Get the P for the track or get the 308 to cruise in.

Porsche is a hard habit to break, hence looking at the 930 before I thought "oh yeah, I could have a Ferrari." But now the dogs are loose. Nothing wrong with tracking a 308 as long as it's prepared properly. Note I said "prepared" not "modified." I don't want to be the fastest, just enjoy the heck out of a fine sports car.

Oh yeah, I should mention this is my brother's fault. I had lunch with him yesterday and said I was selling the 944, looking at a 930. Then he had to go and say "I'll have a 348 in August." Grrrr.

He had a Porsche before I did and I know he's serious about the 348. I can't let him win this race!

Yea, if track is priority you'll need to seek out a dry sump 308, and that will take awhile and then suspension refresh....figure $40K out the trialer onto the track.....

D@mn dude you DID just miss a real nice 1977 wet sump yellow/black.....it went to $35K based upon paint and condition......that was last week.

There's a black/black 1976 fibreglass with hi-po engine mods on the market, up East Coast way.......pricey but worth it!

I'll just note that you can almost buy an early 348 coupe for the cost of a good dry-sump 308 GTB, and you'll get a much more modern car.

Do you want a track car or do you want a 308? The Porsche will run rings around the 308, a 308 will result in very frequent maintainence (expensive if you're not a DIY guy) if you track it often.

OTOH, a Ferrari is a Ferrari and that's the reason people buy 308's. I say buy a Ferrari and if you hate it after 6 months you'll get back what you paid (less the obligatory new 308 belt service), or even a touch more if you got a good deal.

If you want a great track car AND a good driver, check out a Lotus Esprit. $30k will get you a really nice one that will be faster and handle better than the Ferrari and Porsche.

Good point there T., however that robust full tube frame provides better "smack into something" protection than Ferrari's first adventure into unibody construction.......;)

348s are beautiful cars, we see an unused Challenge version here that is breathtaking........no arguement it is apples to oranges against the 'old girls'....

Hmmm, if one is to continue to "smack into something" then one should continue to drive Porsches ;)

I'd have to agree with Ken. If you are really into the track days, then stick with the P car. If you really want a Ferrari then get a Ferrari. If your budget is 30k then you'll probably be looking for a wet sump carb car. I know it is tempting to say "for a few thou more, I can get a QV", or "for a few thou more I can get a 328, then 348". Before you know it, you've doubled your original 30k and you still haven't set any $ aside for any maintenance or repairs you may need to do.

    Good Luck

Well, if you're fed up with mechanical issues and are looking for something fast and dependable and headache-free, count on fchat to steer you into a 308.

I sold my 993 last year, bought a 328 recently. No mechanical issues with the Porsche, but a month after I bought it I knew I was still going to have to experience the Ferrari 'thing' anyway. I just dropped several thousand bucks on the major service that was due, and would be surprised if there weren't some other expenses this spring. 308 costs are similar. So if you're smitten by the 308, go for it, but know that a better Porsche (911) is going to be a more reliable track car.

But, as the tagline goes: "Ferrari: There is no substitute." (or something to that effect)

I have to agree 308's don't make good track cars although they are still fun to run once in a while. I have run 308's in the past and still run my 328 GTB once in a while, but I spend a lot of time getting out of the way of other cars. If you are really into track days, I recommend a Subie STI. On track days, it runs with the big dogs and thrives on abuse. Of all the Jap cars I have driven, these are the ones with the most personality and driver involvement. You can buy a used '04 for mid 20's or a new one for low 30's. 308's are great classics that are beautiful to look at and entertaining to drive. So, spend 30K on a 308 and replace your daily driver with a Subie.

THEY are smacking into ME!! Not the other way around! LOL!

No way F cars are without headaches, but as Bullfighter has donee, you can sure do some PM every once in awhile to reduce them.

When someone says 'track' to me, that implies a doubly high effort of prep compared to street use, where those 25 year old rubber bushings are fine if they don't make too much noise.......;)

Track cars should use tie wire on the fasteners, that the other big difference.....!!!! Wet sump 308s will actually have oiling problems if you are not careful, on certain tracks.

There's a 'sleeper' glass dry sump, on the board here....it's stuck in the back behind some more notable cars......

I'm not a heavy track driver, but like to run a few times a year. No matter what car I end up with, I know there will be a chunk of cash into prep, bushings, shocks, brakes, everything. Been doing it a long time. I've got twice the purchase price into the 944t and still can't really enjoy it. For the money I could already have a 308! A nice GT4, granted, but a 308 nonetheless.

If I couldn't track the 308 I'd pick up something fun anyway, just for that. I've driven the STi several times and it's top of the list for a daily (wife drives a Baja). But I've got a reliable old nail of a 525i for daily duty right now, so priority right now is a fun sports car for weekend and occasional daily use, rallies, mountain drives...ahhhh...

Then later, either upgrade the car for track days or swap out the daily. I'm going to lose my a$$ on the Porsche, a 308 looks like a bargain right now.

Best advice here. Ok you convinced me, I'm starting the search. Anyone know someone who might want a really nice modified 944t (~320rwhp)? Very nice condition, stock appearance, couple issues, hence I'll let it go cheap. PM for details.
