I saw the movie on NYE. I had read a few online comments and opinions and went in with high hopes, but low expectations. I came out feeling elated. It was far better than I expected. My (non-tifosi) wife also enjoyed it. I certainly want to see it again now I know of other details to look out for.
Any movie about a subject that you are close to will attract criticism as the movie-makers didn't make the movie that was in your head. There are bands I am a fan of and I always find movies about them frustrating in what is missed, whereas a movie about a band I enjoy, but am not a fanatic of I often enjoy more. For example I hated 'Super Dooper Alice Cooper' (I'm a huge fan), but loved 'If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film About Lynyrd Skynyrd' as I like their music, but am not a massive fan. I couldn't see past the flaws in the former and was unaware of any in the latter.

I haven't seen the movie yet but definitely will. However, I'm not convinced by Adam Driver, he's too thin (Enzo had an intimidating stature), he's too young (greying his hair isn't enough) but maybe his performance is good. This production has taken 12 years to arrive because before Rush and Ford v Ferrari the 'suits' didn't think a racing movie would make money. Early on Robert de Niro was being suggested for the part. Now, in my opinion, he would have been perfect.

I saw the movie the other night, enjoyed it. But based on what I was told about Enzo from a cousin, it lacked some of his prosses. Perhaps it was there not to offend Piero, but Enzo for sure was known for his womanizing. And you can see how women would be attracted to his reputation.

I saw the movie on Sunday afternoon and was quite impressed. It's more of a human-interest movie than a racing movie and can't really be compared to any of the movies that you listed. I was pleasantly surprised at Adam Driver's performance, though I agree he should have been made to look older (Enzo was 59 at the time) and plumper. The locations were perfect (where were the Modena Autodrome scenes filmed?) and the racing scenes were generally believable (though the flying cars seemed to get awfully high off the ground). I do think that people who are unfamiliar with the story going in my find some of the scenes hard to follow, and the film will be more appealing to Ferraristi than the public in general, which may hurt its box office action.

Ing. Antonio Tomaini, second in technical command at Ferrari racing department during the seventies, was Mauro Forghieri first assistant. He was invited to see the "Ferrari" movie in Modena, December 8th: a car came to pickup him at home and he was given a free movie ticket too. He liked the movie so much that he purchased a ticket and went to see the movie again in the following days.

Antonio Tomaini did know very well Enzo Ferrari

Enzo was a "horn dog" and went after any young lady he could find. He lusted for years after Collins's widow, and there are tons of pictures of him with her... He would start most conversations with drivers about their girl friends adn and ask very inappropriate questions...

Yeah, when you understand this is a character movie, not an action race movie, I think it can be better appreciated.

I think the movie was excellent, The cars added to it but the story itself was interesting and engaging on its own for people that are not Ferraristi. Mrs Selma should get an academy award.

I hope the film will be nominated for a few Oscars. I'd nominate it for both lead actors as well as for editing and photography.

Make-up department gets a Razzie though for not making Driver look fat as well as for the silly hair on Dempsy (Taruffi had grey hair with some white in between but not like this).

I agree that he should of been fatter, getting wrapped up in the story I forgot what Enzo actually looked like., Also a few phrases in the script in Italian would of been even better.

Saw it on New Years Day and I thought it was just "ok". I am a big fan of Michael Mann, but this was far from one of his best films. Or put another way, it's a "movie", not a "film".

I thought it started really well, but quickly plateaued into a series of vignettes that tell a very straight forward "this happened, then that happened, then this happened, etc" kind of retelling of historical events. Mann wasn't able to elevate it into a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Mann presents a picture of Enzo as a very typical Italian husband circa 1950 something...wife, mistress, mama...no different than most of the men he meets on the street who address him with such deference, but fails to give us any insight into why they revere him. And we aren't shown how this rather cliche type of guy ended up taking the death and horror of the racing he loved, and transmuting it into a feeling of romance that put his cars into a class of their own. One almost comes away feeling it must have happened in spite of him rather than because of him (which may in fact be true....Enzo cared about engines not bodies).

It was however, beautifully shot. And Mann and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt strung together a ton of beautiful images. A lot of references to old master paintings in the lighting and colouring they chose.

The racing scenes were anemic and not very original. The French Connection did a better job of putting you in the seat of a car moving at high speed.

I thought the acting was good. Penelope Cruz was wonderful. The actress who plays Enzo's mother was great. But Driver (who I also like) presented a version of Enzo that felt like a sort of a straight man to all the other characters in the film, which in the end didn't work too well.

Ultimately the movie just didn't know what to do with itself. And it definitely had no idea how to end itself.

C'est la vie. Its a decent popcorn movie. The cars are still the cars.

The thing that saved "Rush" was the acting. But "Ferrari's" acting towers above it. And the writing and directing are better, as well. "Ferrari vs Ford" is a cartoon in comparison.

I share your opinion, "Ferrari" is a deep movie that wants to dig inside main character souls: it's a drama. Ford vs. Ferrari is a - very well made- action movie, much different: not better nor worse, only different.

Disagree. The British accent was jarring, did not fit at all into the picture. Bad casting call.
