Ferrari will go back to using the traditional "lollipop" system in the Japanese Grand Prix following the problems they had in Singapore.

Brazilian Felipe Massa lost all his chances of scoring a good result in the night race after the mechanic controlling the innovative lights system made a mistake and turned the green lights on before the fuel hose had been detached from the car.

The lights system usually works automatically when the hose is removed, but the system was operated manually in Singapore.

Team boss Stefano Domenicali said Ferrari needed to simplify things at the moment, and so they will be using the lollipop system in this weekend's race in Fuji.

"In this moment we need tranquillity and therefore we prefer to go back to the old system," Domenicali told reporters.

Ferrari failed to score any points in the Singapore race and lost the lead in the constructors' championship to McLaren with just three races to go.

Massa is seven points behind Briton Lewis Hamilton.

I wonder why it was operated manually? I thought the idea was to shave 0.2-0.3 seconds off the stop by "automagically" switching on the green when the (presumably) proximity sensor(s?) detected removal of the hose. Why do that and then control it manually?

    Makes no sense.

    cheers,

It does when you remember that someone has to make sure the pit lane is clear before the car is released.

I'll concede that, but figured there was some kind of interlock that would prevent it going green, even when "pressed" if the hose was still in place - Otherwise, why bother?.....

i suppose the system was overridden manually because Kimi was queuing up behind Massa. seriously tho, i still can't believe that disaster actually happened.

But that's the case all the time. The automatic system should have a manual override button that will hold it yellow while traffic is passing. But it wouldn't go green when you released the button until everything else was "green".

The idea of having to override the automatic system to try to squirt the car out between incoming machines just shows how squarked up they have the pit rules during an SC period, these days.

The idea of "closing the pits" when the SC came out was because having everyone dive into the pits at the same time was "dangerous". So instead, they collect up all the cars into a pack, and *then* open the pits, so they all come in ... at the same time.

    Riiight.

Who cares what they use next race it's too late, they already screwed Massa out of the shot he had at the WDC.

well, for Massa's sake, lets just hope it's not over.

anyways, all we need is Kimi to push, and lose control and crash into Hammi the next couple of races :D

but seriously, one puncture for Hammi could throw the ball back at Massa...
