I've often wondered... does anyone actually use those coveted original Ferrari tool sets or is it really just important for that anal sense of completeness and/or a potential bargaining chip (in case of the absence or incompleteness of it) when buying a Ferrari?

Has been discussed elsewhere a lot... if it's still there, it says something about the care taken of the car, yes it should be reflected in the price, but I wouldn't pass on the right car if it didn't have it.
On useability of it, the tool quality is fair but not great and in the case of the 456, while you get belts included in the kit, there is no hex wrench that is needed to get the belt covers off :-s. So while some emergency fixes are possible with it, imho it's as much a showitem as it is useable. Most owners will call the AA anyway in case of a roadside problem.

I had occasion to use the tool kit on my '03 360 Modena a couple times, and didn't hesitate. Needed to replace a blown brake light circuit fuse one time, and the kit included everything I needed, including the spare fuse. Can't recall what else I used it for, but think it was some other minor issue.

First time I used it, it did not appear it had ever been used before. Interestingly, though, the leather straps holding the kit in place in the boot were cracked nearly all the way across, at a bend near the buckle. I had it out a few times when cleaning the car, as well as the times I used it, and the straps eventually cracked completely through the leather, leaving only the stitching providing continuity. (This was on the pass-through strap, not the end with buckle attached.)

If the tool fit, you must use it.

My all-original and complete tools, books, and expense receipts are kept in a climate controlled and sanctified environment.

Why not - I rarely work on my own cars anymore and if I need to fix or install something minor, an ordinary tool will do.

I have the owners manual in front of me as a .pdf, and model-specific Ferrari parts diagrams are readily available on vendor websites.

When you see some of the prices on the tool kits it'll make you rethink their value. Originality is the key more than ever these days. If you have to run around after the fact for tools you'll wish you bought a car with them. As far as using them you probably only need to in a pinch if ever.

The tool kits for the older cars - 1960s - contained some truly valuable items to use as real tools - such as the hub pullers and the lead knock-off hammers.

Since no one would know what was wrong with one of the new cars - unless they put the scanner in the tool kit - and certainly have no idea how to fix the problem if it could be identified, the tool kits for the newer cars are merely for show - as in concours show.

I disagree. The hex tool in the 360 tool kit is perfect for removing all of the fasteners that hold the carpet panels in the boot. Once these are out you have access to a bunch of other items. I've already used it a few times and will continue to do so. Also, some times when I don't feel like walking back to my shop for small stuff I'll grab other tools out of the car.

I use my 360's tools, of course they are not the original tools, some previous owner replaced the Ferrari tools with SnapOn equivalents into the tool pouch.
