The auction description is technically "accurate" by virtue of omission. I think the jack might be correct, that may be it. The modern Beta wrenches seem to have been aged/dirtied. It will be interesting to see the banter on BaT.

Actually, I will amend my prior comment -- the Beta No. 55 wrenches in the auction are probably correct for a 275 GTB - I confused them at a glance with the modern wrenches that are labeled "Beta 55". They wrenches in the earlier 50's/60's cars were "Beta Auto No. 55", but Beta No. 55 is correct for 275.

 

That's what I mean by accurate "by omission". If you make no claims about authenticity of each item, you (technically) aren't misrepresenting them. Some of the tools are correct, most aren't -- the description doesn't seem to comment either way about the correctness of any of the individual tools.

"Accurate by omission" (of hugely important facts) is a pretty well-worn tactic, even in the high profile auction houses. I remember probably 10 years ago there was an F40 that was being auctioned that I think had been totaled twice (according to a trustworthy source), and that wasn't mentioned in the auction listing. The listing talked about the speedometer having 2500 miles, which didn't match the actual mileage, and referenced work being done, but had no direct reference to the prior carnage.

I don't know if that still happens today, but I remember a few of those that were beyond the pale.

One thing I like about BaT is that at least there is active dialog between seller, buyer, and peanut gallery (often a mixture of experts and non-experts) to help flesh out the listing details. That dialog can help a lot -- not all comments are correct, but they usually get sorted out with additional comments from others. I actually like BaT better now that it has gone higher volume -- it's a viable marketplace now (if you are careful), compared to than back when they had hand-picked ultra rare or low mile cars that sold for untenable premiums (for most of us, that is).

I agree with your frustrations about the lack of specifics in the listing, but that listing would probably pass muster most places (accurate by omission). I wish there was less tolerance for omission of important information, but that doesn't seem to be the case in most of the auction world.
