    "Ferrari worked closely with German giant Robert Bosch to develop its direct-injection system, and insiders confirm that the technology will find its way onto all of Ferrari's road-car engines except the dated V12 in the 612 Scaglietti. The company admits that it pulled apart several of Audi's FSI systems--both hardware and software--to discover the tricks of the direct-injection trade, and this has helped achieve fuel economy about 25 percent better than the F430's 12 mpg."

    "Ferrari also claims that the California will be the cleanest Ferrari ever built--but not as clean as Lamborghini's LP560-4, even though the Lamborghini has 100 hp more than the Ferrari."

    Do you really think Ferrari needs to understand how direct injection works, based on Audi's software and hardware???

    Working closely with Bosch means exactky that, working toghether... as they do for some years now...

    Bosch learns from Ferrari and Ferrari understands Bosch... That's it!!

    I'm sick of this story...ferrari copy lexus,, ferrari copy audi...ugly car....not enought power...not a ferrari.


    When you will see this car live you will remain with your mouth large open.

    It's not that Ferrari or Bosch copied from Audi. Bosch developed a direct ignition system for Audi, and now they use the experience they gained for other customers, like Ferrari. That's it.

    One fact remains, no cutting edge technology will ever emerge from Ferrari (not that I can remember it happened in the past...even the F1 tranny is being abandonned now, and the concept of more or less automated manuals existed already in the 70s-80s), simply because it became way too complicated (read expensive) for them to make the required R&D or to purchase something from Bosch before majors will. It is like that ever since Bosch & MB teamed up to develop the ABS, ASR etc.

    The modern "Common Rail" injection system is a direct injection system for diesels, and as explained below (from Wiki), this was developed by Magneti Marelli and FIAT's research divisions:

    "This was extensively prototyped in the 1990s, with collaboration between Magneti Marelli, Centro Ricerche Fiat and Elasis. After research and development by the Fiat Group, the design was acquired by the German company Robert Bosch GmbH for completion of development and refinement for mass-production."

    I read an interesting article about all that stuff some days ago. The last decades, the subcontractors depended heavily on the automobile manufacturers and were forced to cut costs at any price, if they couldn't, the next subcontractor was already waiting to do the job. Over the last years, the balance has shifted. Companies like Bosch have gathered such a huge amount of experience over the years of working as subcontractors for various car companies that the manufacturers' own r&d departments can't keep up any more, especially when it comes to electronics and that kind of things. They now depend on their subcontractors, without whose technologies they couldn't build new cars at all as their own development departments can't do the work anymore.

    So many people like to jump on the hater bandwagon to deligitimize the F149 California and in my opinion it's unfounded. It's every bit of a Ferrari.

    Ouch. Still love the 149, will have an early car and can hardly wait for it to arrive. My newly arrived Evo X also uses Audi technology in the SST gearbox and it is fantastic

    Guys, whats going on? Are there still believers out there you think that everybody develops everything themselves?!?! BMW has a assembly quote of 20% today, means that 80% of the car are developed and manufactured third party.
