F1 powerhouse Ferrari ranks No. 15 with a value of $1.1 billion, up 3% from last year. Ferrari extended its $52 million-a-year sponsorship deal this year with Spanish bank Santander. This follows Ferrari’s blockbuster extension last year with sponsor Marlboro worth as much as $500 million over three years. McLaren’s value fell 2% this year to $800 million as main backer Vodafone is reviewing its sports sponsorship commitments. McLaren would be hard pressed to replace Vodafone at comparable levels. McLaren also faces the free agency of Lewis Hamilton, who is one of the most marketable drivers in the sport. Hamilton’s contract expires at the end of 2012.

The Cowboys are 3rd?!?!? Above the Yankees!! WOW

I thought Ferrari might be a bit higher considering they had so much success in recent years and they consistently fill the stands with red.

I assume the value didn't take into account their merchandise line of shirts and everything not related to the race team. Or take into account their sales of cars. Can anyone verify this?

Without wishing to completely hijack the thread I found it interesting that the top two (and 4 of the top 10) are football ("Soccer") teams! :p

I don't recall who it was, but I got into a little pissing contest with someone here a while back about just how *huge* soccer (sorry) is worldwide....... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Marlboro is paying Ferrari $150mm+ per year to NOT be on the car?

    Indeed.

I haven't looked for a while, but I don't think they're even "Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro" as previously. (?)

However, PM continue to haul in huge $ and may as well write it off.

Further, IIRC, they "own" the car - Santander, Kaspersky et al pay PM, not Ferrari I believe, so they get some back....... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Marlboro honored the remainder of the contract with Penske even though they couldn't put their name on the Indycars....but didn't renew.

I just don't see the point in renewing a nine-figure advertising contract that doesn't allow you to advertise your name. such is the power of the Ferrari brand, I guess.

Looking at the Forbes list, did they happen to use BEER sales as the only indicator of value?

Are we looking at the same list? I see 2 soccer teams at the top ;) both in countries that have populations 1/4-1/3 the size of the states. ;)

So...the Ferrari F1 team is worth about the same as the 30 some-odd remaining GTO's they built 50 years ago.

On a worldwide basis yes; hence the billboard of him in Times Square....The Scherzinger connection helps a lot as well....no ffense but a billboard of Alonso/Vettel does not have the draw power of LH....

4 of the top ten are soccer teams.
    They are world teams.
Just as the Cowboys are not a Texas team.
    They market to the world.
Not just to the kids down the street.

I think they are still called this in the interview room. Not 100% sure but a friend and I were arguing about this and I recall winning

    +1!

Some people still don't understand the widespread popularity of soccer everywhere (except here). Soccer IS the world sport. Imagine that a soccer team (Chelsea) even has the wherewithal to sponsor the Sauber team!

Marlboro was dropped from the official Ferrari F1 name on 8th July 2011:

“Philip Morris and Ferrari have responded to recent concerns regarding the official Ferrari name and have decided, effective immediately and worldwide, that 'Marlboro' will no longer be part of the team name,” Ferrari communications manager Luca Colajanni told Pitpass.com ahead of this Sunday's British GP at Silverstone.

“Whilst we do not agree with the concerns raised, our decision has been taken in line with our history of responsiveness to similar issues and to avoid what would likely be an unnecessary and unproductive debate.”

“It's our decision. We already comply with all the rules in the United Kingdom and everywhere else,” added a team spokesman when talking to SPEED.com on the same issue.

Despite this, Philip Morris tobacco are still more than happy to sponsor Ferrari with no visible link to be seen anywhere because they are aware that people will still acknowledge the link to the Team regardless.

I suspect if there is any reference to "Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro", made in the interview room, it is actually done in error due to a force of habit, that has not been corrected by anyone.
