Would a 245/40-20 and 305/35-20 work? Available in Pilot Sport 4S. Thanks again. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes - best to keep the % change the same. Some drift is allowed as the computers have to be able to cope with different wear rates on front and rear but it’s about 2% difference AFAIK. I don’t think 245/40 and 305/35 would work as the rears only increase by 1% vs 4% on the fronts.
Image Unavailable, Please Login Jerry kindly shared a spreadsheet that he used for his Lusso research and I adapted it for the FF. If I’m understanding this correctly, your new setup with aftermarket wheels led to only a 1.9% increase in front diameter and a 1.4% increase in rear diameter. Do folks think a 245/40-20 and 295/40-20 would work? That increases the front diameter by 3.3% and the rear by 4.3% - only a 1% variance. Maintains essentially the same widths as stock, too.
Im running the contis but the car isn’t here so cant check the sizes but i used whatever jerry told me to get - yes lm lusso wheels only cuz i like the aesthetics.
I’m no suspension expert but I wonder if this is also part of the issue. If your car is lowered, the suspension is doing less work absorbing potholes (less suspension travel available) and the tyre has to do commensurately more than it was designed for. Perhaps the solution is 255/35 and 305/35 combined with raising the ride height back to stock.
You'll be running the same tire profile in the rear that comes factory on a BMW X5, which will not only look silly, but throw off your speedometer and traction system. Also, since the vehicle does work in 4WD mode for the first 4 gears, I'd be reluctant on running anything different than 1.2% in tire height differences between the front and rear tire, so as to not stress the 4WD gearing system.
Appreciate the input. I agree that raising the ride height back to factory spec seems wise. I’ll talk to the Ferrari mechanic this week. Maybe stick with factory sizes or try the 255 - 305 combo.
I’m running stock ride height and my winter tyres are the factory recommended 235/35 and 285/35 The front sidewalls do look hella thin but so far so good (touch wood!) so perhaps ride height has a lot more bearing on the issue than we give it credit for.
I’m thinking the same. A few days before the last blowout, we felt the FF suspension bottom out on a gradual dip in the road. The car was fully loaded with myself, my wife, and two grown kids (about 665 lb of people in addition to the 4,400 curb weight). Never felt that before in our previous non-lowered 2012 FF. That’s reassuring that your example has survived 235-35 up front. I thought 245/35 was hella thin! [emoji23] Still waiting to hear back from the dealer about 255/35 and 305/35
I have a set of original FF wheels over since I sold my FF - anyone in need of a full set of wheels are welcome to give me an offer...
Where are you located? Are you by chance in CA? I need stock ff wheels just bent mine, are yours the diamond cut or the optional forge?
I just read through this entire thing. Does not seem like there was much resolve with the stock wheels. You can't really run a taller sidewall than 35 with the stock wheels, but you can move to a 255/35/20 to gain a little more sidewall due to the larger size for the fronts. For the rear you just run the 305, but there seems to be some controversy around doing this as the tire may be too big for the width of the wheels and compromise handling/performance. So with stock wheels what is the best set up to run at this time? My plan is to go to the 812 wheels I think and run the f12 tire set up. I know these wheels fit on the f12 so with 10mm spacer they should fit the FF and have the added width to run bigger tires properly, giving me a little more sidewall/protection due to the size increase but still run a 35 sidewall. The 812/Tdf wheel has been fitted to the FF before, without any spacers. I wouldn’t recommend it from an axle load perspective but there haven’t been any reported fit problems. I can see that you’re encountering the same frustrations I did when trying to find an alternative to the FF or Lusso stock wheels. I’ll save you the trouble I went through by simply saying that I ended up with a custom set which gave me the fit and strength I wanted for my wheels. They cost less than a new set of forged wheels from Ferrari and I couldn’t be happier.
I had them fitted by my Ferrari dealership in December 2019. Front; Image Unavailable, Please Login Rear; Image Unavailable, Please Login
Apologies, I thought you were asking about my winter tyres as that’s the message you quoted… If you want to know about the custom wheels, they’re made by OZ Racing and I started a whole thread on the journey to fitting them. And although they’re ‘custom’ and available in any size, one of the OZ Racing standard size options fits the FF very nicely. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/project-zeus-20-21-oz-racing-forged-wheels-for-the-ff.626267/ Here’s a teaser of how they look; Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I would really like to fit the 812 wheels. I think it can be done, but would need to change the tire set up to that of the f12. 812 runs a 275 in the front and not sure the FF could pull that off and the rears may be pushing it with a 315 tire. It sounds like there is a 15mm spacer needed also for the rears. Ia take it no one has fit the 812 wheels on the FF yet. I have seen f12 however. Any help or advice here is greatly appreciated.
