Should FerrariChat.com use IntelliTxt as additional revenue?

  1. No - Too much of a distraction, I wouldn't get use to it.

  2. Yes - Not a major impact to me, good if it supports FerrariChat.com.

  3. Maybe - Like to try it for awhile.

I've been approached by IntelliTxt as a way to receive incremental revenue (not directly impacting current streams) by implementing the advertising software here. It simply works by linking words in posts that are relevant to advertisers. The words are colored green and double underlined. If you pass the mouse over it you get a small pop-up with more info. If you click on it, FerrariChat.com would get paid.

Based on our traffic they estimate an OK amount of revenue. It wouldn't be anything compared to our current sponsors or subscriptions, but it would be something extra. Maybe a little negative impact, but I don't think we would loose many sponsors or subscribers over it.

I would never do this if the overall community was strongly against it. I also realize the community is strongly against any changes right away. It is possible we could try for a month and then take another vote. It doesn't appear to slow the site down at all. The page loads normally and then a second later the screen is refreshed with the linked words.

Below is a picture from RX8Club.com that uses IntelliTxt ("BMW" and "luxury car" linked) or follow this link to the actual post...

Rob, as a test it would be fine to try and then vote. I would probably vote against, only because I go through enough advertising all day long its getting tiring of all the pitches.

Followed the link and didn't see any clickable, highlighted words  but I get the idea, I've seen it before.

Gotta tell you, every time I see something like that, I think I've gotten spyware (oh excuse me ad-ware) on my computer. Reminds me of that Gator toolbar thing that I couldn't get rid of.

I'm on board with the site generating maximum revenue, but as a user I'm opposed to this one, it would be distracting.

Plenty of white space on the bottom of the pages, maybe use that real estate for an additional rotating sponsor ad? just my $.02.

    No. Nasty ugly popup stuff.

How about implementing forum-specific advertising? Surely there's guys who want to advertise but only need to broadcast to Texas or Australia

I like the idea if it's relevant to direct site sponsors. For instance if I type in brakes it would link to stoptech (just a random example). If it's going to be more along the lines of random sponsors, linking to cell phone sales, 10 CD's for $1, and b/s like that, I think it will seriously degrade the site.

Yep, good point, some of these spywares go through your word docs and highlight them like this. People would get use to this though, it is green with two underlines.

I've never used a site for a long time that had this, I'm not on RX8Club or any others very much. I can set how many links there are per page. A page is 20 posts and a typical amount would only be 5 words for that entire page. You are only going to see a pop-up if you drag the mouse over that word.

The idea is that once users are use to it, you basically ignore it, if a word you are interested is highlighted, then you can then mouse over to see more.

Of course FerrariChat.com is the one getting paid, but I don't think it would be a huge distraction.

One thing I need to look into is implementing similar software, but on my own where it links to our sponsors.

This is basically an advanced ad sense, all within the posts and not a separate table.

I really can't believe so many people have voted against it when they haven't even tried it. Maybe you are imagining dozens of words in each post? Like I said, maybe only 1 word per 5 posts. Only people that should vote against it are people that have been at other sites awhile that implemented it.

Of course, when I proposed moving to this forum software, 80% said no. :)

Why do you bother to ask if you're just going to dismiss the results?

Yes, I've seen it on other forums. It looks bad and makes it appear people linked to things they didn't, and those links they cannot control. Do I have any recourse if I'm praising one guy and this software links to some other random vendor?

Nope. It dilutes my investment as a sponsor. If you need more revenue, just charge me a higher monthly rate. Seriously.

Nice Speedy308-style triple post, Rob :)

Maybe you can find another site that gives an example? Like I said, I visited that RX-8 forum and saw no evidience of the software you describe. (Edit, I did dig a little deeper and find examples in the RX-8 forum. I still don't like it. ;) )

And I second Tillman's question, why ask our opinion if you're already convinced we're wrong? :)

We're just talking it out, still healthy. I can take issue with the voting results for good reason. There were the same type of results when we did initial polls on vBulletin, subscriptions, and moving P&R to subscribed. Now look at the results, who was right? :)

    good points, keep them coming.

The software was being "sold" to me that it is incremental revenue. Doesn't impact current ad channels, just ads a new dimension.

As a sponsor would you be interested if I added a feature were keywords you picked are linked to you?

I don't like it. While I have less concerns about spyware, there's something innately disturbing to see that the text I have created in a personal/public discussion has suddenly become advertising links - and those links are beyond my control.

Since they're paying you, obviously someone is tracking who's clicking through on the links. Who is that, and what do you know of the data logging, data storing and aggragate use of the data?

    Excellent point.

Also, you are never in control of what might pop up. See this example. The dealership I bought my truck from, sent me a link to a website that I could use to track my maintainance. This made them look terribly foolish.

Not really... and here's why: I have found that click-through rates on Fchat aren't a driving force to my website. Instead, it's the limited number of sponsors and relatively few commercial distractions here. Fewer "other" things on the screen = more screen time for my logo. I have worked with other "content type searches" on the web, and can immediately impact my eyeball numbers, but the click-through rates are terrible. On the other hand, with very specific keyword site optimization, I have fewer eyeballs but a much higher conversion rate. It's the old quality vs. quantity argument.

Just my 2-cents and 3-timing belts worth,
    Daniel

They control the advertisers better than that. We would be in the automotive category, I'm not saying something couldn't slip by, but browse RX8Club.com or other sites, its not like that.
