I think so too, but is it worth it to sue? I don't think so. If you added up how much I spent for off-site backups and Drive Savers, it is probably $3,000. I think I would rather just move on than fight that for months and years to come.

rob - you should at least review your SLAs and if they didn't meet their standards you should ask for what you think is reasonable. you might be surprised - if they really feel like the screwed up (which i don't see how they can't!) then they very well may be reasonable people since they didn't meet their side of the agreement. if you don't have an SLA or the like, then you're at their mercy to be ethical, nice people (which it sounds like they may not be).

Their perspective has simply been... "we're sorry, our drive failed, you should have told us your backup file exceeded our threshold, we gave you 20 hours of our $100 an hour time trying to recover this, you can pay Drive Savers if you want."

So that's basically it. I was paying for the offsite backup, I never knew they had a threshold and I never touched that process or the file. They had complete responsibility over running the backup and putting offsite. You think they should have caught it when the threshold was exceeded. You also think they would have refunded all my backup money and paid every dime trying to get it recovered. Instead, they said they were doing me a favor by not charging $2,000 for the labor.

It's your site and it is up to you what you want to do but you are running more than just a forum website here now you have a nice business that will continue to grow (user base and sponsor) and you have people paying for the services that in the future might not be too happy if a drive crashes and the host tells you to go smoke a pole.

RAID 5 baby + more secure off sites = hopefully this crap never happens again.

Every month or so I even download the database local, but that didn't crash this time. In the future I will download the app files too.

When all the bills are in, site down with the provider and outline your costs, pointing out that they have a responsibility. You might be surprised at a positive response. If not then be sure to mention that you will let a lot of people know what happened and the service that was (not) provided. Nothing like legitimate bad PR.

    Cheers

That quick outage we just had was the drive with what was recovered being installed. It will take a few days to analyze what is there.

I just took the first look at data that was recovered. I've only looked at the attachments from when we moved to the new software 11/2003 until the crash 12/2004. The good news is at least 50% of the attachments are there and are working properly with the new attachments in my test bed. Bad news is there are still many missing and if I merged everything correctly, then those are lost. Right now I'm confirming with various sources that I merged everything correctly and the lost attachments weren't related to my procedure.

There is no rhyme or reason to what attachments are there and which ones are lost. There are images there as recent as the day of the crash all the way back to the first day on the new software. However, there are also many attachments missing in that complete range. There is no pattern to forums or even threads for which attachments are still missing. Every thread I've viewed so far will have some posts with images recovered and other posts with them lost. If a post has several images, it appears all of those images were completley recovered or completley lost.

I'll let you know, but that's the status for now. Below is my guess right now what data has been recovered...

50% of attachments recovered from between 11/2003 and 12/2004.
50-100% of posts/attachments recovered from old software 12/2000 to 11/2003.
    0% of newsletters recovered.

Everything besides that has been fully recovered.

I'll keep you informed. None of these will be available to users until after the switch to the new server in a couple weeks.

    Thank you,
    rob

I'd like to say that the most important data is the Technical archives, as searching them (or NOT searching them, as the case may be) causes the most fights and frustration on this board. I can't describe the pain of doing thread searches to answer tech questions and seeing that almost all of the useful pics I've needed for visuals are all gone......

Well, good news is at least 50% will be recovered and all those missing pics that were posted can be reposted. I haven't seen too many topics on FC that haven't been talked about 3-5+ times over. :)

    Hi Rob,

do we - yet - unsubscribed users regain that free webspace, which is presently filled with lost attachments ?

    Best Regards

    Martin

Of course, if everything is recovered, nothing will change.

If we only have the partial 50% or so attachment recovery, then we'll first try to regenerate your stats, and worse case we'll just raise the unsubscribed allotment from 5 mb to 10 mb.

    Thanks,
    rob

I'm mainly working just on the new server now, but since I could quickly get the Live Chat back up, it is now available again here.
