Do you think this is a good idea

  1. Yes, I like the age range designation included in posts

  2. I would like actual age shown - not a range

  3. No, I don't think it's a good idea

I was going to PM Rob about this, but then I thought it would be good to have everyones' opinion on this. I have noticed when reading certain posts that I have to try and interpret them with some understanding. I think everyone who posts on ferrarichat is an asset and I enjoy all the responses. Though sometimes I think it would be helpful to know if I'm talking to someone who isn't old enough to drive, just started driving, or maybe has a few years experience. Especially when people are asking for advice. I know some of the more senior posters have clashed with the different generation on fchat before. What I'm suggesting is a radio button or something that you can place your age range.

    For example
    Age Designation
    =================
    0-15 - Pre production
    16-20 - Hot Rod
    21-33 - Sport
    34-50 - Classic
    51- Vintage

Get the idea? Ok, how many people have I offended? Thoughts? If it's any consolation, I'd be classic.

    Good thought!

Although with a little experience it doesn't take long to peg the youngsters..

Although give 'em credit, SkizoAce may work in a car wash, 15 yo, but he eats dinner with Tony Vallone, and Dahr Jamail, Enzo driver, so what the heck!

Really what you are asking for is a mandatory "FILL OUT YOUR PROFILE!"
prompt, if those logging on have not done so......

I think zupra is our youngest member, at 12.......

Glad you think so....... I'm waiting for the fallout.

The profile is a good idea, but what I'd like to see is right under the Name on the post itself something that would show it so you can frame your responses accordingly. I would prefer not to have to click on the profile just to get a feel for this. Make sense?

    LOL

I knew I'd be opening up a can of worms.

What do you suggest? It is a term of respect. I could have suggested "old jallopy"........ BTW - In case you haven't figured it out, this is a very rough, broad stroke, idea.

I'm always open to ideas. I like to think that users make the changes and not me. We capture birthdays, but that's just to send a birthday email if you fill it out.

I sent Zupra and email about all his posts, but for 12 years old the kid is much smarter and a better user than many. It's hard to tell if I'm giving a 12 year old or maybe one of the most famous Ferrari people in the world advice sometimes. Either way, this community kinda equalizes everyone to an extent you don't let the cat out of the bag.

what did you say to zupra?????

you can tell he's an IM user, but he truly does want to "chat" Ferraris, which places him above every troll we've ever had to deal with here, IMO

He did find we had no place for "Utah" with his very first posts! lol

I sent him a helment and some signed Mario swag I had collecting dust.....

I think he's content down in "SpeedyChat" in OT, for now

    yeah. that's the ticket. twenty-two.....

i'm gonna lie and bump myself down into a lower category too :)

your abstract goal is quite rational,LetsJet, but this is probably not a great way to accomplish it.

some boards have "ratings" where users can rate other users. this might be a nice feature rob for paying subscribers. let those folks rate anybody. this way you avoid the trolls screwing up ratings (this is what happened on 6SO, imo). if some troll wants to pay money to register fifty logins so he can screw up DrTax's ratings, well, the good doctor probably deserves it ;)

rob - isn't that functionality a part of this software? 6SO seems to use the same stuff (albeit modded up).

so the ratings thing might be an easy thing to test out.

you won't get rid of the trolls, but at least people will be able to more easily skim past them and their posts. maybe there's a setting option "don't show me any posts from people below 2 stars" or "anybody with X or less stars should be assumed to be on my ignore list".

it looks like 6SO just shut off the whole ratings system at some point - it got compromised.

the software seems to support THREAD rating too - that'd be interesting for som of the off topic stuff that has lame subjects - you could see that it's been rated low, and just ignore it.

    doody.

That goes for you too, do-do head. Geeze buying some piece of German junk instead of an expensive Eye-tal-yun sports car that breaks down a lot. Man, this board is going to hell. Where's BRUCE when you need him?

LOL, I'm enjoying the responses. There is no advantage to bumping yourself down (unless maybe your a woman looking for a Ferrari owner). It's just a way to help with the relationship building / understanding. As for the ratings, not a bad idea. I have a 100% rating on Ebay for about 6 years. I can see it now. My first "what does this thing do" thread and I'm demoted to a rating of garage sweeper.

I think putting it on each and every post is excessive. Displaying age in the profile is a good idea IMHO, but should be optional, just like name, job, and location.

This software can rate threads and users, it would only take me 1 second to turn it on. We actually did have thread rating on for the first 1-2 weeks back in November. No one used it though. Keep the ideas and opinions coming.

Speedy, I was nice to Zupra, maybe I would have treated him different if I knew his age though. I had no idea. Anyway, just said "quality vs. quantity" or he could join the league of carbon as "Post Whore". :)

Although on its best day, this board can only hope to be PG-13, I really do want to encourage the younger users positively. Hey, they'll be the enthusiasts buying our metal when we kick the bucket. Something like a welcome package with t-shirt, pictures, model, and stuff.
