So, the reports of climbing temperature gauges seem to be creeping in from all over. It's not just Ferrari owners, either. Lots of posts in lots of other forums from owners of high-power cars with temperature "issues".

So, I've decided to post some things to keep in mind as we drive in this icky, sticky weather:

    - Keep Moving. As long as air is flowing through radiators (and oil coolers, where applicable) your car should be in ok shape. If you're in stop-and-go traffic and your gauge keeps climbing, pull off, shut down and chill. The temperature of your car should come down considerably in about 15 minutes.

    - Keep the Revs Low. We love the noise. We love the power. If you're not moving fast, keep the engine cool by not revving above 1,500. For real. As you get any amount of speed, watch how quickly the engine temperature will fall... then you can turn up the revs.

    - Check your oil. Watch the pressure. Check the level while the engine is running. Make sure you've got enough in there! Be careful, the oil cap will be very hot. If you do not know what oil is in your car, have it changed. Keep extra oil in your boot.

    - Keep the A/C Off. The A/C uses lots of electricity from your alternator. The more juice the alternator needs to generate, the harder the engine has to work. The harder the engine has to work, the more heat it'll produce -- even at idle. Be mindful of additional accessories, too: Valentine1, K40, Lidatek, Stereos (Especially with external amps), Cell-phone kits, etc. Also, switch off comfort suspension settings. I believe that in comfort mode, the suspension system actually consumes power.

    - Watch the "Slow Down" Light. On 5.2 Motronic 355's the Slow Down light means you have 2 minutes to shut the car down before the car shuts down for you. (At least, as far as I can read in the manual)

I know lots of this is common sense, but even in the "moderne" 360s, you still have to be careful with heat. Those Ferrari engines run amazingly hot and I'd hate for a 2.5 hour jaunt across town cause more grief than a 160 mph run to Seaside Heights...

thanks for the tips... a little too late.
just got back from classsic coach.... left my car there.
because of the abnormally hot temp coming from engine bay.

i dont knwo what it is, but i have tried all your tips emil, and i
still get my water temp gauge jumping to red zone (i dont have
a/c on, radio on, v1 on, i am at low revs, oils good, coolant good, etc)
    i am pissed.

anyway, one other tip i heard from our good man carlo at cc...
if its running too hot, turn on the HEATER to the highest level...
its going to be crazy HOt in the cabin, but this switches on a radiator
in the car, at elast in the 360.

    didnt go,
me, hubert, chris, vik, lupe all had our buffet in merrick F-Chat EC ghetto style: at the nathans/chinese food/fried chicken/mexcian fast food place across the street from where everyone else was... they were running a
    special ferrari breakfast buffet: $4.55/person

after that we just left, but got hubert and i got separated. not too much traffic going back, but my engine bay was running hot. decided to go to cc,
    left the car there.

Good call. Something's awry. My car is running hella hot, too. (I'm thinking that there's something wrong with my engine fans) maybe it's just indemic to Ferrari driving in this sweltering heat.

Just up to Gus's and back. Had to pick up my GPS that I left at his place.

    - Up to his place, just under 194°

    - By the time I got back to the garage, red over temp light was on.

Thx for the tip Emil, good lookin out.

Jon, is it the water or coolant temp gauge that goes into red zone? On my car I "think" it is the coolant temp gauge, the only other temp gauge is the oil temp, which has been always normal.
Anyway whatever it is(water or coolant temp), it is usually right in the middle(190) or lower when I am moving at a decent speed(50mph+). but it QUICKLY shoots up when I am in traffic, it gets in the 1/2 box before red zone, which is about 240-245. As bad as the traffic was on Friday to CC, it still only topped there, never got into the red zone, then once you move fast again the temp drops quickly.

If your car went close to red when you are moving well on highway(like today back from LI), it's definitely not normal.

This is what your car is SUPPOSED to do! Mine used to work that way, but in the last month it's been flaky...

    hey woodear,
    nice seeing you today.

its not the oil temp gauge (which is at normal level) its the other one,
and it is not doing what you describe, it is not bouncing between red and normal, its always in red zone with the red light on, and at some points even
hits the end and stays there regardless of speed/rpm/etc. the car is pissing me off, but what can you do, thats ferrari for you.

does the CS have this problem? =)

    that sounds very strange jon

sorry to tell you it COULD very well have something to do with the capristo.. it generates a lot more heat, though I have heard its not that bad if you have the challenge grill on

    hey utkarsh,
its definitely not the capristo, the heat coming
from the engine back is so hot that my neck was literally burning.
    very frustrating.

that really sucks, especially when you have ferrari now claiming these cars to be daily drivers

did CC say this is normal? there must be something else you can do besides turning the heater oN!
