Anyone have an idea on what a frame -up restoration might cost on the 250 GT LUSSO on the far left?? My guess is about $75,000 give or take.

Living between Walter Medlin and one of the most legendary Ferrari collections in the world must be kind of interesting. Do you ever speak with Mr. Medlin about his cars or his collecting habits? How did you originally discover that you lived near this collection??

Depends what it needs, but you will lose money almost every time if you want to take it to concours level. Concours resotrations can cost more than the car is worth. Even if you weren't that exacting, I'd say more like 150K-200K, perhaps more depedning on what the car needs.

A friend of mine is a long time friend of Walter and he showed me pictures of his cars and the barn etc. but first he asked me if I could keep a secret and that I was to never tell of the things which I was to see or who was there or where did I see them. He never told me where the cars were located and also said that Walter is sort of a "loner" and a little extrange, I felt as that he didn't like extrangers. One of the pics was of my friend driving the Jody F1 close to something that looked like a warehouse or a shop not sure.

The Huffaker was a race car built "around" (very loosely around) the 308 body shape. The cars had 308/328 motors - tuned to racing specs.

The build quality was nice but as I understood it, the powerplants proved insufficient by the time the rest of the car had been sorted.

I beileve that they eventually built three or four.

I don;t think that any were ever successfully campaigned.

I heard that they were not all that good on the track - but never had the opportunity to try for myself. The complaints that I heard concerned rather quirky handling characteristics. Odd, in a "fully" adjustrable car - but possible.

Medlin is a sick man that needs help. Kind of like having that buying disease that some women get, buying all kinds of clothing leaving the tags on them and buying more to store in their closets/room. Same situation, different item.

    No longer here

I've known Walter Medlin for 25 years or so. I daresay you've never met him.

    Your comment is simply offensive.

    I agree.

They are his cars, fair and square....

As a coastal resident I sympathize with anyone who gets their house storm damaged, Mr. Medlin included. I've done it. It's no fun!

You guys quit talking out your a$$ and go start your own barn.

    Like I did........ :)

That is pretty cool. I wish I was as fortunate as you to be allowed to see such an amazing collection of cars. To be able to meet a unique individual such as Mr. Medlin and be allowed inside that world is a blessing. I am guessing that you already realize how lucky you are though. :)

Walter Medlin needs our help, not our condemnation. We need to reach out to this man, and let him know we appreciate him and his collection. With a little warmth and sincerity, perhaps he would 'open up', and speak to us or share his passion with us. His cars need drivers and caretakers, not scavengers and greed-mongers. This guy needs a FerrariChat dinner invite.....

If a guy is smart enough to compile a collection of dozens of Ferraris, don't you think he would know when he's being buttered up and given a snow job? I bet he can smell a Ferrari vulture from 10 miles away!

I agree. If anything, he's probably reclusive because people have been actively trying to separate him from his prized possessions for so long that he's fed up with it and suspicious of anyone who approaches him, especially those with so-called "good intentions."

If any of you harbor the illusion that you will somehow be able to pry one of these prizes out of his hands for pennies on the dollar, perish the thought. You don't get to have a collection like that by being stupid. So just leave the guy alone, and dream that you might some day be so lucky. Bottom line -- they belong to him, and what he does or does not do with them is his business and no one else's.

Well, I for one am NOT interested in buying something from him that's for sure. Pretty much everything he owns is too rich for my blood (ten times over). So if he thinks I'm a vulture, the both of you need new medication.

The guy seems to be pretty friendless and reclusive - the fact that Ferraris are expensive seem to put many mult-car owners in this camp. Maybe that's the lifestyle of Florida Vintage Ferrari Collectors, I don't know......to me, that's sad. This guy might be a hoot to sit around and talk cars with, or invite to a local rally.

And NNO could use another friend, anyway.....where do we send the FerrariChat gift basket?

Some have voiced the opinion that all the "barn cars" have been found. Possible, but the thing about them is that the owners of barn cars don't advertise (even within their families) and don't live where you would expect. I know this personally because recently I experienced a barn find, although non-Ferrari. While working at the family farm a few years ago in South Dakota, we moved some cattle to an uncles property. At the time he was in his late 80s and no longer worked, so we used his land to graze. Among the trees around his house were more than 100 old cars. Come to find out he loved cars and NEVER sold one. Every car he had purchased since his very first car that he bought used in the 1930s was still on the property. Some very restorable, some with trees growing through the hood (big trees). In his barns were 4 classic Triumphs, 3 65 Mustangs (including a convertible), and a bunch of other stuff. Oh, and in a hanger at the airfield a Piper that was fully restored in the late 80s, but never flown. At the very least it was super interesting to see all the machines around.

Don't worry about those Florida barn Ferraris. Another hurricane is approaching from the opposite direction, and it will probably blow the barn back into place.
