The current addition of "CAR" magazine has a bit of a write up on that but ugly 599 thing. Usual new Ferrari "wow" stuff; but they had some comments from a Ferrari design head that made me take notice. He was talking about the 599 being the last of the "late 90's designs" and the Ferraris of the future will have increased performance naturally; but they will be SMALLER, LIGHTER and more fuel effecient. They will occupy less space on the road and they will have a variation of the new DSG gearbox technology (used in the Veyron and similar). There was also a mention of a smaller and lighter supercharged Ferrari in the works too.....

If this is accurate, it could be very interesting indeed. Current Ferraris are getting enormous in size, they are far too heavy and trully ugly. Sure they go like stink; but you can't use the performance on todays roads anyway. Who needs a butt ugly, fast block of flats.

Ferrari might be "about to lose it way" Rumours about much more sales and competition against BMW / MERCEDES/ PORSCHE are coming from everywhere.
Scott we might just be lucky enough to both have cars (F40/F50) from a golden era, that will not exist in the future. And I have a feeling that the 430 might be the last great V8, before the new COMPACT stuff starts.

If they follow the styling cues from the 360/430 range rather than the 599/612 cars then there might be some pretty "hair dresser" spec cars to come. Unfortunately the golden age of F40/F50 type super cars may no longer be economically viable. The lighter super charged car may be the much anticipated and denied Dino replacement. What ever happens, i hope they dont go the way of Porsche with SUV's and additional model lines. Ferrari is supposed to be an exotic dream not a soccer mum's taxi. Just my $0.02c

but page 93 says they won't increase production so to remain an exclusive brand , they say no new dino as that would destroy the entire model range . do you like the cover with the FXX ? sexy bit of kit

I think the FXX issue was last month's? I am awaiting the current OCTANE issue which apparently has an anti- FXX column from Nick Mason. Should be interesting to read his comments.

I will wait and see; but I am of the opinion that Ferrari has already lost it's way. The cars are currently too big and heavy and my God they are ugly.
I actually LIKE compact and light cars because not only do they go; but the brake, turn and handle as well. This is why the 288 GTO is one of my favourite "modern era" Ferraris- looks to die for, enough grunt combined with small size and light weight. As much as I love my F50, it is too big to throw around and in traffic it is a nightmare.
I am hoping the new era brings Ferraris that are in the spirit of the 288.

well, dont hold your breath. F50 wasn't really built for traffic conditions, same as the F40, not good in traffic, but boy, what a buzz, out on the open road.
But more.......boxer was never good in traffic. 308 was sort of okay, but loved open roads as well.

Yours is mine. I'm talking about the difference of being in traffic vs being out on an open road. Being in a boxer in traffic is not my idea of fun and you might as well be in a toyota (where the aircon works REALLY well) BUT, I know what car I'd rather be in, on an open road

You are quite correct of course. The best drive that I have had in the F50 was the drive day in the WA rally. That was mega, well done guys!

My guess is that if Nick Mason doesn't have an FXX, it's because he didn't want one! ;)

    Well,
I was of that opinion till I read the CAR article. Cant help but thinking if I had the dosh I would be there!

But theres no doubt they have lost there way and Scott I agree with many of your comments.

They have complteley mishandled themselves over the last couple of years and I for one cant wait to see for example, what Glickenhaus' one off special bodied Enzo turns out like.

Dealers here have been told there are no more new cars above what theyre getting and that overral production will be less than this year, next year and less again in the following year.

If at the Company level theyre not going to make more cars it means that the current cars will become more expensive though the V12s will be cheaper to pilfer sales from the V8 cars. The only other are where they can increase revenue is licencing and frankly we need to be more worried about that more than anything!

Therefore their efforts in the next few years at the dealer level are going to be in the area of used cars apparently where they will hope to claw back some margin.

Ferrari have obviously been studying the Porsche model closely of late but they need to be careful as that dispassionate process could lead to ruin if the correct choices are not made.

We havn't heard the last of Cayenne in my opinion and one can only speculate as to the effect the Cayman will have.

I think the fact that they didnt proceed with the "Dino" is an opportunity lost and could have have been a second brand sold through dealers in the spirit of the original; that is it could and should have been branded just as a Dino with a proprietary motor shared with someone else.

There is no shortage of engines in the group and a Ferrari developed version of the new Alfa V6 or a new block based around the Quattroporte/ 360 engine with 2 cylinders lobbed off may have been ideal.

People after all over thirty years later still debate whether the Dino is a real Ferrari or not and has that led to the diminuition of the brand? I think the answer is no, and in relative terms the increase in production at the time was probbly greater than what they were contemplating today.

This company needs to act and act soon before its too late.

Bring it on, a lotus elise spec car (chassis & weight wise) with a nice exotic engine.

    thats for me :),

the lotus is all good except for the booring engine, if a car like this had the power of say an M3 it would be ideal.

i welcome the move to smaller lighter cars.

I think perhaps the Yanks are responsible for the increase in size of most cars.

Intelligent commentary there John, refreshing to see some lately! I agree entirely and I too am interested to see the rebodied Enzo of Glickenhaus. People seem to have forgotten that the Brunei cars were of the same ilk; but interesting indeed.
