Thank You! I was waiting for that one. Its one thing to say you dislike the direction Ferrari is heading in their designs, but its another to devote so much of your time specifically to put down the marque saying they are crap. To each his own I guess. I think its crazy that anyone can call the 360 ugly. I mean, look at the CS. For me, one of the nicest Ferraris ever. But, thats just me. The Enzo is a bit radical, and I did not like it when it was first unveiled. It grew on me however, and when I learned more about it, I couldnt help but be intrigued and astonished at the same time. Dont like the nose? Maybe its not the prettiest smile in the stable, but, when considering the PURPOSE and FUNCTION of those lines, its incredible. I think Ferrari's objective with the Enzo was to create a Bad Ass car, with superior street/track technology, and to set new levels at which performance are measured. I think they really hit the nail on the head. You dont like the Enzo? You hate the 360? The 612 us the ugliest thing you have ever seen? Fine. But dont devote so much time and energy into letting us all know how you feel, over and over and over again. Like Zjpj said, it gets old REAL fast.
Ferrari styling I like the most: 360, 308 GTB, 355 (growing on me a LOT), F50 Ferrari styling I like the least: Enzo
The style of the Enzo was never going to please anyone. The car just isn't styled in a 'safe' way. It's an extreme design, worthy of an extreme concept. If it was to anyone's taste, the design would've failed. I, for one, love it. The shape has so much to offer. From every angle you see something new. You see it's complexity, but yet, it all makes sense. It truly is a masterpiece.
The 360 & 550 are both pretty cars, but do have some awkward proportionalities; i.e, the 360 headlights and front bumper seems a bit oversized, while the 550 rear - end / trunk design looks pre-maturely shortenend. Nonetheless, both, IMO, are beautiful cars. I never really like the 288GTO, but loved the F40; never really understood everyone's love of the testarossa, but liked the boxers. Every generation of cars has hits & misses, depending on personal tastes - this includes the vintage cars as well; like the SWBs , 250s , older testarossa races, Lussos, et al., but never got into the Daytona or 356 series of cars; its subjective. Of the new line of cars (enzo; 612; 430) I 've only seen the 612 & enzo and was dissappointed by the 612, but have loved the enzo (conceptually) since the 1st press photos - it's gorgeous, and takes on a life of its own in person. The 612 and the 430 seem very, very awkward; the lines don't flow, the overhangs are larger, bulky and detract from the unity of the design; in all honesty, it seems that Pinnanfarina are taking ques from Bangle's influence, and his direction with car design - which I hate! We'll see.
IMHO the rear of the 430? looks far too much like Bangles Z4, as far as I'm concerned Ferrari needs to let Pinninfarina do the styling and should persuade Leornado Fiorvanti to come out of retirement ASAP, getting designers to copy the Supra for the 550 was bad enough (before anybody complains I have BOTH sitting on my drive now and they do look like they were designed by the same person on the same day!) but getting the designer to make a junior Enzo / Z4 wanabee is terrible, the Enzo maybe wild (at best) but to water it down is shamefull
I have to agree! The first time I saw a 360...I thought it was a 911. I was pretty depressed. The Enzo looks like Toyota designed it and the 612 could be a Buick. I think an exotic car should look exotic. But having said that they are selling everything they can make...so what the hell do I know! Ciao Dino
Sad but true. Most of the current car's appearance is dictated by aerodynamics. It isn't that they don't want to design "pretty" cars, they are working under a much different set of rules. The good old days when the designers held sway - and could pen lascivious bodies - has given way to the quest for performance. The Enzo was not designed for aesthetics, it was engineered for performance. Wait until the 550/575 replacement. Little "historic" touches, like the "SWB-esque" bump coming off the rear quater and onto the door and the hood scoop will be the next thing to disapear - you can hear the engineer - yelling over the whistle of the wind tunnel - "why do we need the bumps and scoops, they must go, they are hindering the aerodynamics" From that perspective it is not so strange that the 911 and the 360 look similar. Diffferent concepts, but the same laws of physics and aerodynamics. Don't get me wrong, I do not dislike the styling of the new cars, I just don't think that it is "pretty". I appreciate the designs for a different reason and I am fascinated by the technology that they represent. Progressing in a fashion that improves the performance of the breed is a good thing even if, at some level, astethics suffer. In contrast, I have always loved the shape of a Daytone Coupe. That bullet shape was a bold move away from the flowing lines of the 275. That being said, at about 150 mph, my passion ebbs at a rate equal to the amount of lift in the front end. Add a stiff breeze to help you wander around a bit of the track and you soon find yourself HATING the beautiful upturned, bullet nose. Progress is good. Scottie
It's not as simple as if you don't like it don't buy it. Enzo Ferrari worked his whole life to create the most beautiful and exotic cars ever made and made the "Ferrari" icon and image, in the last 16 years since his passing Luca has done much to lose this image with boring designs, mega increases in production and in addition to licensing sellouts cheapening the brand. As Ferrari owners it's a pisser to see Ferrari turn into what it is today and we have every right to "voice" our opinions on the direction Luca has taken Ferrari.
I don't care that some of you are sick of hearing that Ferrari's new styling is ugly. Because I am sick of hearing that it is "great", when it sucks. You guys are the ones that wore the blue plad suits and platform shoes, to go with your porkchope sideburns, to the office. I even bet you can find one of your old brown leisure suits in the closet. That stuff may have been new and in vogue back in the day, but try wearing that to the office today. You would look like a complete idiot. Now when you look at the same stuff you see just how ugly it was and still is. Just the same, Ferrari's new styling may be new and in vogue, but it is still ugly.
"The last really beautiful Ferrari was the 275GTB (1967?)" And don't you feel that the 550/575 has captured that styling brilliantly?
Hey Bart Your car, the 550, is the last good looking design to come out of the factory. I bought the Ferrari that made me happy. But none of the current designs make me want a Ferrari. As for getting something that makes me happy. Well, it looks more and more that my next exotic will be from the Lamborghini family.
I agree 550/575 is the last good design, I went to see the 550 at Newport Autosport the otherday, then I went to see a guy with an Ultima Spyder. I miss the 550 dearly, but I am trying to figure out what body type of Ultima to get, I will avoid the current Italian/German exotics. I think if there are nothing but ugly cars, I will buy/build one for less with far better performance. That is until the F60 or next body styles come out in what 2010?
Focus on what you like. There isn't enough time to be worried about what you don't like. Personally I think the 360 is one of the most perfect forms ever created, and is genius in how it combines traditional elements with modern design.
Sorry, that sounds like the old "USA, love it or leave it" logic. I'm gonna side with Ernie on this one. There's no where else to turn for the style Ferrari used to turn out, so we have to speak out. Best! Wes
You complain about the style of modernday Ferrari's, yet a 348 (a TS even) makes you happy? Thats odd...
While the fact remains that Ferrari just can't make everybody happy. Sure, they could try, but then you'd end up with a design that no one really hates and not really loves either. The design that is aimed to merely please, will do just that, but nothing more, and Ferrari is aiming higher that that, and so they should.
Wow, I'm not sure what to think about this one. I took delivery of my "ugly" Ferrari CS a few weeks ago and I happen to think it's a work of art. Styling of the older Ferrari's like the 288GTO (probably my favorite) simply didn't have the influence of the wind tunnel testing and development. Therefore they may have cues that would be unacceptable for the car to be stable at 180mph. We all have choices to buy whatever we want. If you like styling of the older cars, buy an older car. The trickle down from F1 is the number 1 reason I bought my Stradale, and I love it, looks and all. I will probably never sell it and when everyone is driving flying cars, people will look back and say they loved cars when they looked like my Stradale. If we all liked the same style of vehicle everyone would be driving 288's or something that looked like it. And that aint never going to happen.
