The thought occurred that, how much longer will Ferrari be allowed to keep making gas hogs?

Can't you see the government stepping in and mandating a minimum MPG requirement thus forcing all manufacturers to meet a certain standard and them not being able to just pass it on to the consumer in the form of an extra tax?

Anyone see Ferrari becoming a little more green in the not too distant future either on their own or by some government legislation?

If you take a ferrari, and lug it at 1500 rpm at 55mph, like every other car does, the mileage would likely be decent...

Now, repeat at 7000rpm...viola: 8 mpg on 12 cylinder (about what I seem to average...:) )

This essentially exists now in the CAFE standards and the gas guzzler tax. Ferrari is too small in production to hit the CAFE radar, but you do pay a guzzler tax on a new car.

Like tobacco they would rather turn it into an income stream. The GG tax will just go up.

How many miles does one put on a Ferrari that this would be an issue?

How many Ferrari's are there that this would be an issue?

That day will come when they start making NASCAR or F1 cars with better gas mileage.

Incidentally, I probably average about 20 mpg in my 348...There are TONS and TONS and TONS of other makes that do significantly worse then that.

LOL...TONS being the operative word for poor fuel consumption in many mass-produced vehicles. Can you say 'stretch Hummer'? I know you could.

A tank of gas will normally last me more than a month in my Ferrari. I can't get it to stretch a week in my Audi. My boat on the other hand, that is a gas guzzling hog. At $4.00 a gallon on the lake and a 100 gallon fuel tank that thing will make you sit up and take notice.

agreed. as if gas tax isn't enough....soon the GG tax will be 25%....and it'll all go to some crazy Green group who will use it to fund their activists in burning down "evil" SUV and Ferrari dealerships.

Green doesn't produce Ferrari performance, the two just do not go hand in hand. It is my hope that Ferrari continues to make 12 cylinder engines regardless of how much fuel it uses. If the cars need gas, then make some more gas. I never understood that gas shakedown tax, as if anybody was really happy about paying it or it somehow magically helped automobiles save on fuel. If anything, I see people trying to escape it. I hope I never see the government standing in Ferrari's way, but rather step ASIDE and let the free market continue it's course.

Not necessarily true. "Did you know that a Formula 1 car is more fuel-efficient than a normal passenger car? While a 900bhp racing car uses 0.78 litres of petrol per bhp, a compact-class car with 75bhp uses 0.093 litres."

Maybe this is some technology they could pull from the F1 team ;)

You can bet they can do anything they want in Italy--forever. I paid 4500. gas guzzler tax for my 430 which I have gotten 17MPG with so far. Do you think Uncle Sam is going to give that nice slice of the pie up? My Subaru STI is marginally better at 21MPG. Both are better than many full size SUVs and P/U's. The new markets they are going to certainly on't give a crap, so, all in all, I don't see any "green" Fcars anytime soon.

While gas will not ever be $1.25 a gallon again, the current crunch should ease over the next three to five years. Our refinery capacity is the current bottleneck. There is about an extra 20% refinery capacity coming online in the next four years to ease that crunch. Maybe during this spike we will see less love for the SUV and get back to a little better economy overall. That would be nice.

IIRC, Ferrari paid around $1.1 million in U.S. gov't penalties after the 2004 close as a result of this. Porsche was the only company to pay more;keep in mind how many cars they produce in comparison.

So, Ferrari will continue to produce gas hogs until they (we) can't foot the bill.

17mpg ??????? Are you going to the exact pump and each time stopping at the clickoff? Around town with some highway driving interspersed I get 12-13mpg and on a recent 200 mi trip 14.5 in my 430.
Either you are driving VERY gingerly (humanly impossible with this machine) or your calculations are spurious.
PS Have you checked to see if they put in a ford focus engine by mistake? LOL

Maybe he is using the VORTEX intake enhancer! 17 mpg does not seem unreasonable for a 430 on the highway.

17mpg on the highway can be accomplished at 50 mph-downhill--with a good following wind!!
Actually don't know why I'm having this input since what 430 owner really CARES about mileage??

uuhhh...this data says the F1 car is significantly less efficent, assuming L/bhp is a meaningful measure to begin with.

  20. SrfCity

    SrfCity F1 World Champ

Wrong-o. If you do the math correctly the F1 car uses less litres of fuel per BHP.

  21. Bryan

    Bryan Formula 3

The note says the F1 "uses 0.78 litres of petrol per bhp" It doesn't say the F1 car uses .78 L, so you can;t do the calc .78/900. Now that may be what was meant, but that's not what it says...

The note also says "a compact-class car with 75bhp uses 0.093 litres", so that is .00124 L/bhp.

In fact, there is insufficient info to do any meaningful calc.

The 1st tank was 16mpg, the next 4 delivered a consistent 17mpg. We do a little better here because of the high altitude which robs power and reduces drag.
