    Hello,

I found a 458 Speciale that I like, and I am trying to figure out what I should check to make sure that I am buying a decent car.

Single owner, it has been drove 23.000 km (6.000 on track). It got a small accident where they needed to replace the front bumper and the front camera, but Ferrari told me that it is not even registered as a crash as it was very small. For the rest, the spec is good and the car looks in good conditions.

Does anyone have a small checklist I can use to make sure I am buying something good?

While here: 23.000 km on a Speciale is quite a lot. How much should I be concerned about this? I plan to drive the car over the weekends, track it very sporadically, and do one or two long trips a year. I presume that once it hits 40.000 km it will become very hard to resell?

    Thanks!

    2. Make sure price reflects damage history
    3. Easy to resell with lots of miles on it if priced accordingly
    4. Enjoy best production V8 Ferrari ever made

I would pass. I wouldn't mind high mileage as I just bought the high mileage Pista but 6000km track mile is a lot IMO. Plus an accident. Speciale is a very special car and even one small accident could hit the resale value tremendously.

Agree with this… that’s a lot of track miles, and the car has damage. If you’re to use it as a track toy then fine.
Since it has been tracked quite a bit, I’d make sure to do a thorough PPI at a race shop. Need to check suspension, bushings, alignment, if there’s a way to check ECU… how many times the engine has been redlined…

If you’re looking for an investment-grade car, this is probably not it. Personally I buy cars with no intention of selling them and every intention to drive them, so that speciale would be just fine by me if the PPI checks out. If you don’t instantly love it, then sell it before you put very many more kms on it.

Agree with those above about what this purchase could mean to you in the future in regards to resale.

I’m looking for a Speciale as well and a PPI is a must in my opinion.

Nice general check list to consider and much of this covered by PPI:

    brake pads
    rotor thickness and condition
    scraping of the nose
look for more body damage (small blends on corners)
    Sticky buttons
    Tire dates
    paint correction declaration
    PPF type and year
Look for oxidation particularly in wheel arches
    ceiling foam condition
    check motor mounts
    Windshield chips
Battery status - year and charge

    Seller should have:

    - both keys
    - full maintenance records
    - security code card
    - OEM charger
    - manuals
    - tools
    - winder sticker
    - Car cover

    Good luck!

Can a PPI reveal if someone had an odometer blocker (correct term?) on there?

Sounds like the perfect car if it is 30-50 grand cheaper than a similarly optioned car and PPIs well. I wish one of those would have come up in the states! I wanted a drivers' Speciale, but couldn't find one.

You can refresh an awful lot of components for the savings you should be getting on this car.

I am not looking at an investment car. I am fine driving it and I am fine with the depreciation. I just don't want to be stuck with the car if I want to flip it in a bunch of years. Not even sure this is a real problem, though: what people have been pointing out above regarding the track miles is likely the biggest issue.

It is quite cheap compared to the rest (not much) I could find in Europe. But I am not considering this one because of the price (it is ~50.000 Euros below others that have ~10.000 km) but because it has a great spec (giallo triplostrato, a lot of external carbon, plenty of options to make it a good car for the street too).

That said, my consideration so far is that I would probably care less about the miles if I were planning to keep the car for a very long time. Which I am not, at the moment, as I ten to get bored by cars.

At least you are honest with yourself. I've never purchased a car I didn't plan to keep for life. But then I make a little more money and end up upgrading.

I went to test drive the MC20 today and, while talking with the dealer in front of a glass of wine, we discussed milage and track miles. He said that an heavily tracked car is probably not the best buy for me, but also he mentioned the fact that ownership history is much more important: cars with 2k miles may end up being harder to resell than cars with 6k miles but a very solid history and ownership by well respected owners. I think it makes sense.

I will ponder on this one over the weekend, but maybe the best option is to pass and wait for another one that has no track miles and no accidents.

The vibes I got testdriving the Speciale made me feel that it may be a car that I want to keep forever. That said, I don't have space for many cars where I live, and I could keep it in another country but I will end up never driving it, which will make it pointless for me - at least given what I am looking for at the moment.

Nobody knows what will happen: maybe I will end up buying a great condition, low milage speciale and ending up keeping it for 20 years. That'd be fine anyways :)

I don't know the answer, but I presume that it is to avoid issues like this one that it is usually better to buy from either a well know dealer or a private owner that you know very well? I'd assume that nobody from these groups wants to mess their reputation up by selling cars that are hiding problems or extra miles.

Interesting question, and I don’t know the answer, but I doubt there’s such thing as a blocker.

I do know of a whistleblower incident in South FL that involved a F dealer and their ability to roll back mileage using their DEIS tool. The scandal involved a La Ferrari and a CEO of a well known company. Classy guy and dealer, no?

I also heard, anecdotally, that the transmission also keeps track of mileage. Again, that’s anecdotal. I’m sure there are smart folks here who can provide a more comprehensive response than I can.

Buy from an F dealer with a CPO warranty and you'll be carefree - the miles and repairs wouldn't scare me if it passes the certification for warranty. It's a great car meant to be driven, hope to afford one someday.
