Today while driving to work after getting off freeway, car shifted into neutral, after that would not shift past 1 st gear!, and red light came on indicating gear failure!
Will be sending car to dealer today and keep you informed

    Anybody had this happen before?

Currently just passed 15,000 miles on car:-(

Sounds like one of the DCT failure modes that afflicted early 458 and Californias. It required transmission replacement under warranty. Those were 2010 and 2011 model years, though I have heard of a few later ones, but no FFs which begin in MY 2012. But with a little luck your problem will be only an addressable software glitch.

What is the model year of your FF?

Will see what dealer says, still under warranty:)
Funny thing was that car gave no working and was fine until suddenly shifted into neutral and from there was unable to change gears past first!

Keith (SV) is probably right about the TCU in which case it will be an easy repair (after they get a new TCU).

TCU = transmission control unit. The computer that controls the shifting based on the inputs from a set of sensors and the driver.

I have not heard of a transmission failure in an FF despite many having a lot more miles than yours.

Tho it sounds symptomatically similar to the fails in Cali's and 458s.

Hmm, well considering the SLS has basically the same transmission, I basically had the same problem. However mine contained a bit more drama than that. So I was at a red light, when it turned green, pushed the throttle the car jerks and puts itself in neutral. Then the engine goes from a V8 into a V4. How we fixed it was we restarted the car and then it sort of became normal but after getting it to the nearest Benz service station it turned out that the TCU and ECU had a small glitch which was patched in the newest update. They told me that barely any people get this glitch but it does happen. Not all TCUs and ECUs are perfect. I hope your problem is resolved with a update. Keep us updated.

Many of the failure modes I recall in those 2010s and 2011s was a shifting only between even numbered gears or between odd numbered gears. So for example it would shift from 2nd to 4th, while skipping 3rd. It was as if one of the clutches was disabled, so that only the gears on one of the shafts were active. The transmission needed to be replaced though I heard that a less dramatic "fix" was developed later (but I can't confirm that).

I suppose that any of the computer operated DCTs can fail (cf. George Wang's SLS ) ... then you are pretty much disabled. It is not like the old days when we could limp home even without a clutch by synchronizing the gears for shifting.

Roberto should find out soon what the problem is.

So the latest info is that after several days of looking it turns out it is the transmission speed sensor, they have ordered it and should come in the next 1-1.5 weeks, hope to get the car back soon as I miss it terribly, besides this issue no other problems for me as daily driver, hopefully this was it and can use it soon again

Since I planned to use the car daily, I purchased extended warranty until Dec 2016, if I keep the car beyond that will purchase additional coverage, as a first ferrari owner did not know what to expect so I covered myself:)

Good news. It must be a rare failure since evidently FNA does not stock the part. In any event, you should be back on the road soon. :)
