Four inches of snow in the Toledo area on January 1, 2014 and I had to drive :D the FF to the model airplane flying field for our traditional first day of the year flight. It was cold but WAY FUN, both the drive and the flight. First video is one of a few I took on the way there, second video is flying in the snow.

Look at the fluffy snow being blown up from the right front wheel at times. The view out the rear is the wall of snow the FF is dragging along, the rear window itself is actually totally clear! This 35 mile drive was GREAT fun.

SottoZero's. This is my second winter with this car. It is really fun to drive in the snow with these tires. Noting another popular recent thread, it is another reason the FF may be getting more attention than the 612 (I love 612's by the way)

As I said, 14 degrees F and the car is far more stable where there is no stupid salt. The salt makes deep slush which can pull you off the road. Where it was simply packed snow or fluffy snow the FF was easy to drive with plenty of traction. I never exceeded 60 MPH and slowed to 45 when there was slush.

    Toledo sure looks cold....flat.....grey.....snowy.

I guess the car makes it bearable.

Takes a special talent to go 365 in Northern Ohio. My respect (and sympathy)!

But when you get a nice day suddenly you appreciate that! (the best excuse I can come up with for living here:))

Today there was even more snow and cold, perfect for the FF!

Good point about the salt. It also makes for ice when the temperature drops below the (lowered) freezing point of the salt-water mix. Not to mention the havoc played on roads, cars, and vegetation. In SW Colorado where I spend much time, the traction medium of choice is gravel, which is fine for traction without salt's problems. The problem with gravel comes in the spring when all is melted and one is left with gravel flying around like unguided missiles.

I rented a car in Alaska a couple years ago and noticed almost all windshields were cracked, including my rentacar. I would not be driving my Ferrari if I lived in Alaska or another gravel state :(, probably the ONLY reason we are better off with salt.

    Thanks for the videos Rick.

Your model-flying skills are really cool and I like your model floatplane. I can see why Winter might be one of the best times to fly it, except for the lack of spectators, LOL. Your FF's not bad too. :)

I guess it's not surprising but your view of the Ohio country road enroute to Toledo is just like 90% of southwestern Ontario.

Outstanding! The diffuser really puts up a rooster tail in the snow.

I really want an FF now, imagining all the adventures I can have in one.

How do you clean the salt off? Just the idea makes me shudder.

    Cheers,

    George

I thought about tromping on it to show how great the FF is in snow but not while holding my stupid iPhone :D .

Cleaning salt, I wash it once a week but rinse it off every day when I get home, including the wheel wells. I use deionized water for that so it dries spot free. I have the tri-bed system Deionizers | On The Go® and it works great. I have to replace the chemicals probably twice a year.

Don't have snow here yet, but loads surface water on the roads after recent heavy downpours. The car does seem a lot more stable going through the puddles on 'wet' mode than the 612 did.

I would bet on that too. FWD doesn't help with hydroplaning.

Nice Ultra Stick 25, one of my favorites in the snow, although it has a tendency to fall out of the sky with those floats on when you're not paying attention!

I'm running the 32 motor with a 12x10 prop and 4S 5000. It has plenty of power, plus I have flaps on it which really help to slow it down! Nice catch! Ever hear of the Toledo Weak Signals R/C Expo? I am Co-Director of that.

You are absolutely right about ice ... heavy slush is bad too. 13 more inches of snow last night but NW Ohio all roads have been closed by the sheriff so I sit at home.

I haven't heard of it but it looks cool, might have to fly out there for it. I have the same setup although I typically use a 4000 battery for a bit of weight savings. I found the Stick loves to come in with flaps. Once I put them in it was a completely new plane.

Mine last year. We only had a couple of inches which didn't last more than a couple of days, but had to try the FF out! Bearing in mind I don't use winter tyres, it coped amazingly well!

FF's in the snow, I love it! What kind of summer tires are on yours? Pirelli or Michelin?
