I was driving the other day in traffic and the "coolant temperature too hot" warning came on and I damn near crapped myself as I switched the displays to coolant and oil temp (have battery voltage and pressure shown as default), and saw the temp needle at 115c and still slowly climbing to 120c (248f) as I sat in traffic.

I was able to move off into a sidestreet and turned it off immediately, the fans were running and there was a strong smell of coolant. I popped the trunk and there was no smoke or steam but I could clearly see that there were droplets of coolant on the right side of the engine originating from what looked like a small burst of pressure from just underneath the PTU.

I left it overnight and the next day I topped up the reservior with 4 litres until I could see the coolant level and it seemed to settle. I couldn't see anything leaking underneath even with the engine running.

I started the car and drove for a bit and after about 10 minutes in traffic I saw the temp needle creeping up again past 90c (194f), it stayed at 95c and didn't go higher than 98c when sat in traffic. It came down when the car was on the move. I've never seen the temp needle go past 90c before although admittedly I don't have the guage showing most of the time. So it's still overheating in my book, as I think the temp should always be 90c when warmed up.

What gives? Is there anything obvious to look for? The reservior cap is secure and the coolant residue is on the other side of the engine and mainly toward the middle. Looks like a hose popped off but doesn't explain why the car took 4 litres of coolant the next day without it all leaking out immediately.

I don’t think that you lost the 4 litres of coolant in one go. It only came to your attention once the warning light came on and you switched your display. When was the last time you checked your coolant level?

I suspect that the spatter in your engine bay is due to the coolant pressure valve blowoff once the system was more full of steam than water. And judging by the spatter pattern, it looks like it came from the direction of the radiator. I believe the radiator has a plastic case and metal core (which is criminal at this price point) but you could have a cracked radiator case.

If you can’t find an obvious leak in the radiator then the most likely culprit is the water pump itself. There is a weep hole built into the pump housing (it’s a combination water and oil pump and it’s directly mounted to the engine) from which you can tell if the O-rings are leaking as you’ll find traces of dried out coolant around the weep hole.

And I’d echo the sentiment of others about the lost paint on the plenums. Could it be symptomatic of too much heat in the engine bay? I’ve never seen an FF engine look like that.

That engine's been through some heat cycles. God dang.
