FIA Decision -- The Mixed Message in the Decision

So . . . The cars will be on track, and will be free to race. The drivers will be free to score points. Yet, the team points will not count in the constructor's championship?

How perverted is that? If there was misconduct which translated to excluding the "team," then why does not that exclusion include the fruits of the misconduct--which is the car. And if the car is tainted, are not the drivers in the car tainted?

Said another way . . . how can you punish the team which makes the car, without punishing the drivers of that car?

It would have been better if they had just let it all go.

 

This is how you do plea bargaining. Alonso spilled the beans and got off. Hamilton may not have been involved at all. I went to the Hungarian GP and it now appears that I saw Rak's Ferrari take 1st place, both he only took 2nd. He's going to have to quit sitting in the back seat.

Read the quote. Ferrari is satisfied that the truth has emerged. It did not say that Ferrari is satisfied with the penalties.

 

The FIA has been far too lenient again!!$ 100 millions fine is a joke for McLaren, Daimler-Benz, Mobil and Vodafone!

McLaren should have been stripped of all points and excluded from the 2007 WCC.

Alonso and Hamilton should have been stripped of all points and excluded of the 2007 WDC.

McLaren should have been banned from participating in the 2008 F1 GP season.

That's going too far, that would cause many fans to stop watching F1.

 

I guess that would have been one way Ferrari could finally win the WC and the WDC after being spanked for going on 3 years.

 

Personally I am done with F1 for awhile. This whole thing stinks, the fact that championships is decided in courtrooms and that Employees are serious thieves just adds to what is wrong with F1. Instead of exciting racing with some passing, we have Espionage in something called a "SPORT".

We shall miss you, but I completely agree with what your saying. F1 is too much business/money associated, years and years ago drivers got paid peanuts to drive, but did it anyway for the love of it, even risking their lives for it.
F1 needs to examine itself and completely overhaul the sport IMO, people have been complaining for years of no passing, people have been complaining of lack of competition, teams are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to finish 5th in the constructors (nice job Toyota), the races are boring and so is the sport. The FIA needs to thank Ferrari for keeping F1 alive, because it would go under so fast if Ferrari left or lost interest.

 

That's too bad, hopefully next year will be better.

Your guess is as good as mine. However, if by the last comment you mean Ferrari shouldn't have pursued the matter, I strongly disagree. I'm very glad McLaren didn't get off clean. If anything, I think they should have been punished more. See below...

My thoughts exactly. I will not be attending the Canadian GP next year. Bernie's just going to have to collect money from someone else.

I totally disagree with Drive550. Don't read too much into words, especially those spoken on short notice. I think Ferrari bought off on the penalties, not necessarily on the fact that the full truth came out. Ferrari got a WCC and McL lost something like 20-30% of a year's budget. This may have serious repercussions on their ability to develop a winning car next year. If you believe most of what has been said (by Coughlan) the damage to Ferrari was minimal. McLaren did what most organizations do, they tried to protect the people at the top and got caught.
The season is not over. Now we get to find out: a) who wins the Ferrari's driver's championship, b) who wins the McLaren driver's championship (and world), and (as I suspect) is Alonso gone once the season is over. If the latter is true, can McL steer the championship to Hamilton without getting caught?
Formula 1 fans should not get too discouraged by all this. It goes on in all sports, industry, government, etc. Take a few days, stand back, look at the facts and ask yourself what actually happened. A Ferrari employee was disgruntled over not getting a promotion (this happens about every 4 seconds, somewhere in the world); he tried to use confidential information at his disposal to move to a better position somewhere else (this happens about every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world); the information fell into the competitor's hands; it sounds like the competitor made minimal use of the information; and when they got caught, they tried to cover it up (this happens about 98% of the time, somewhere in the world).

 

haha are you a lawyer? that's a really good analysis of why the driver's are still allowed to race for their personal glory. Screw it at least ferrari gets the constructor's trophy back. And if they're satisfied at the factory I guess who am i to complain.

Spanked, seems I remember it coming down to the last two races last year, Schumi almost picked up the WCC at the last race had he not blown a tire, in fact the Ferrari was so much faster than all the other cars that Schumi came up from 10th or so to right behind Fonzo.. It was pretty close the year before as well.. I don't know of any other constructor, other than 2004 Ferrari, who have ever won by a large margin, so what is your definition of spanked?

 

I seem to remember a pretty strong fight to the end last year, I would hardly call '06 a spanking

+1, I've been debating getting more into the ALMS and Le Mans. It's a definate now.

 

You havev a very interesting piece of insight in this message. You ask if McL can steer the championship to Lewis without getting caught. While I know that Rubber Dick (that's Ron Dennis) claims that he lets his drivers race and he looks at team points, he just can't seem to contain his glee for that cocky bastard Hamilton. If Hamilton puts some distance between himself and Alonzo between now and season's end, I'd be willing to bet that RD has something to do with it. It also gives him a chance to flip off Alonzo--beaten by a rookie? I had to let him go.

The perfect scenario:

Hammy should win the WDC, and then handover the trophy to the next highest driver in the points (other than Alonso.) Assuming it is Kimi or Massa, they should hand it back to The FIA as tainted gods. Remember... All of this started with a Ferrari Employee handing out the candy. There is plenty of shame to go around.
