Its not my car so I don't want to put it in Ferrari ads, a member of the Fiat Dino mailing list has his 2.4 spider for sale and I know people in here have mentioned they like these cars.

I KNOW NOTHING about it besides what he says and the pics...no financial interest...just looking to get a Dino a good home. If interested PM me and I will give you his e-mail address.

From the owner: The title says 1972, but based on my research is really a 1971. I don't want to fool around too much on selling it; I may go eBay if there is no immediate interest. The car does not need anything. I also have the original factory red hardtop with silver band. It just had carbs rebuilt, brake lines replaced with braided lines from Superperformance, ignition parts replaced, cables, etc. radiator completely flushed and runs very cool. Fuel lines replaced. Semi-restored in mid 1990's and garaged since, though a driver, not a show car at this point. The car is located in Charlotte, NC. See pics at:

    http://picasaweb.google.com/dschamens/1972FiatDino#

I know you are supposed to use FerrariAds for cars for sale but since its not my car and I know nothing about it, I felt uncomfortable putting it there, mods feel free to delete this if i am breaking too many rules.

    Looks nice.

The main worry with these is rust.

Once it starts fixing that is a Major job.

    There around.

There was one on ebay recently.

Not sure how much head room you'd have with that.

Guys, i don't know the owner personally, car is on the wrong coast for me to have seen it. I don't know what his asking price is, what I posted is what he posted on the Fiat Dino mailing list (I did ask his permission to repost it here before I did). I posted it here because in the past people have said they would not mind finding one of these for themselves.

I have replied to the PM's with his e-mail address, I did not feel comfortable posting it here.

Yes, the hard top is a very rare item, they are around but not many of them. Only 420 2.4 litre cars were made, many had hard tops. 1,133 2.0 litre cars were made and not many had hard tops so a good guess would be maybe 250-300 hardtops total. This particular car is also late enough that it would have been built in Maranello as the last Fiats were built there by Ferrari techs. Yes, rust is a issue on these cars and so please check it out closely. The motor is the standard 2.4 motor so that should be no problem and it has the stronger gearbox of the 2.4. I don't know about the independent rear, I would think it would be easier to get parts for then the 2.0 since its a modified standard FIAT part unlike the rear on the 2.0. Of course the 2.0 is the better of the 2 cars :) (better because its in my garage) but I have often wanted a 2.4 because of the motors parts availability (I drive mine a LOT, so I worry about parts availability)

It would be nice to know it's value, that's a very nice example from the photos.....

I had a FIAT 850 spider for two weeks, it had ZERO parts support, back in 1976...then the gas tank rusted out, from the long time missing cap collecting rainwater....the front hood had rusted clean thru as well......

I have asked the owner if he has a asking price.

there is good parts support now http://www.superformance.co.uk/fiat_a.htm and other websites as well. From the pictures this is a correct 2.4, no obvious mods or after-market parts on it (from the pictures). If you get a price from him before I do, post it.

Asking price is $45K for immediate delivery.
I inquired late last week when I saw his post in the Dino Group. He's a half day drive from me. I was tempted, but pocketbook is a bit tight at the moment and I don't have anyplace to keep it unless I kull my herd.

I love love love these cars! Always have, and have wanted one since I could drive.

I know this is a nice car and it has that engine, but $45K is ALL the money. I've not been in the market, so it's certain that they've appreciated, but this has to be a tough sell unless you find someone that really wants one.

Am I wrong? If so, I missed the boat on these...

2.0's in that condition go from low 30's to 40k and the 2.4's carry a premium (that I am not sure is deserved) so I don't think its out of range but some people may not have noticed we are not in a healthy economic situation and its been a long time since I have seen a 2.4 for sale. There have been concours Dino's that have been in the stratosphere, I think the highest one was near 70k.

it also depends on drivers vs. show cars, this one appears to be in the middle cosmetic wise from the pictures. Better looking than most drivers at least way better then my driver.

Oh I agree - I know some great examples have commanded higher premiums.

If memory serves, the 2.4L cars have an improved suspension? I'd go with the 2.4 myself, if only for the added power and later model year (more kinks worked out).

My big issue boils down to value for the money. I know these are more exclusive than an E-Type, but most wouldn't compare the two.

    I got my driver E-Type - a series 1 coupe - for less than $30K. I couldn't see paying more for a similar condition Fiat Dino...no way.

As I said - lovely cars. I think Pininfarina's design is often overlooked, and it absolutely crushes the Bertone bodied coupes, but I wouldn't pay more than $30K for one. Considering the condition and the current economy, the asking price is optimistic, but perhaps there's someone that really wants one and grabs it. I wish the seller nothing but luck, it really is a pretty car.

Yes, the 2.4 have independent rear suspension although the 2.0's solid axle was very highly rated and when the 2.4's came out reviewers were disappointed with the improvement, it may be better (and I think it is) but its not very noticeable they had expected the difference between solid and independent to be much more noticeable.

The 2.4 in my opinion only has the advantage of better parts availability, yes its more power but its also heavier and makes the car really hard to handle at parking lot speeds and the extra weight robs it of power. The car is faster with a stopwatch but the 2.0 feels faster in the seat of the pants.

I prefer the knockoffs on the 2.0, it just looks right instead of the hubcaps on the 2.4 and the wrap around bumpers of the 2.0 I think look better...really minor details I know. Like I said, I prefer the 2.0 because its in my garage, given the choice I would take a 2.0 over 2.4, given no choice, I still would say thank you for a 2.4.

The only negative with these cars is I can't stand driving them with the top up and it was mid-40s when I came to work today.

Tex...fear not. There is more room headroom in a Fiat Dino than there is in the 308. Of course with the top down, it becomes a non issue.
