I recently noted that the space between the main coolant hoses from the radiator and the tunnel they enter (at the front end) was sealed with a fibrous material. I removed this out of fear that should it get wet it will never dry and doom any metal in contact with it. Since I never drive my car in the wet (living in Los Angeles) my plan is not replace this material or to use silicone to replace it.

    Any reason I need to?

Heat - When I restored my car I removed all of the fibrous insulator, for exactly the same reasons that you discuss. Now I find a significant amount of heat radiating to the center console. When sufficiently motivated, I will remove the bottom floor pan and inject an expanding foam. There is no other way, short of scraped knuckles, of slipping a new material above and over the tube.

It's also a way for "critters" to get in during storage.

You could try sealing with dum-dum. Would be easier to get out later.

So air flows into the central tunnel and then out various openings into the car? I guess I assumed the tunnel has continuous walls so that wouldn't happen.

do you mean the stuff used to seal around auto windows when installing them?

Yes, dum-dum is a generic name. 3M strip caulking can be rolled into a ball and used for packing. I don't think it ever gets hard and seals really well.
