Does anyone know the pluses and minuses of getting a 5th Wheel type RV "vacation trailer" .... versus a regular "hitch type" tow behind vacation trailer...........any insight would be great. Thanks.

5th wheel probably more stable unless you're pulling an Airstream.

There's specific forum for RVs, trailers, etc. Probably more than you really want to know. I think you can do a search without being a member - roll your cursor over "Discussion Forums" at the top and scroll down to search. If it turns out you have to be a member to search, let me know and I'll do it for you. General consensus would probably be to go with a 5th wheel.

Whatcha gonna pull it with? :)

thanks guys! Yeah that site has information overload. Looks like a 5th wheel would be MUCH more stable, so that's what my main concern was.

I agree with that but you didn't say what you're going to pull it with. ;)

You can get fifth wheels like castles on wheels. All the amenties of home, depending on where you dicide to stop for the night. At least with a motor home, some times its hard to dump all the water out of the tanks if your not on a steep enough piece of land type thing. Great things though, park the trailer and drive your truck into town instead of having to drive the whole motor home and everything in.

You can get normal trailers like that as well. And a fith wheel severely limits what you can carry in the back of the truck AND limits you to towing with a pickup.

Though a fift wheel IS more stable once you get into the really big stuff, I get along just fine with a normal trailer with a good anti-sway weight distribution hitch. I tow with a 1500 Suburabn, but I limit myself to 8000lbs or less (usually 4000 or so... if I routinely pulled 8000 I'd want more truck).

Dad tows a 40' travel trailer with a 2500 Suburban and loves it... his previous tow rig was a 1 ton dually pickup with a fifth wheel.

I routinely pull a 2-axle car trailer on a rear ball with my Dodge Ram 2500 (Cummins diesel). I carry a Jeep on the trailer and the Jeep/trailer weighs in at about 4,500 lbs. I don't have any problems, you hardly even know it's back there. Of course my truck is an extended cab, long bed so it has a long wheelbase. A smaller truck with a short wheelbase would probably be less stable. But like others said, if I had a 5th wheel I could kiss half my bed good-bye.
