Upon further reflection, I only want an 'overdrive' 5th gear for touring. Want the other gear ratios kept the same for acceleration.

As the speedo is driven off the output shaft that drives the ring gear, and as the transfer gears are at the input side, changing the gear ratio of the transfer gears has no bearing at all on the speedometer, it will still be acurate.

You can drop your revs by increasing your rear wheel and tire size. This has the same effect of changing your final drive gear. [/QUOTE]

Paul, I was talking about the larger size tires will need a seedo adjustment, since the output shaft will now turn slower with the larger circumference tires.

So much for a quick response on this...

You can get a drop gear kit from me, which includes one drop gear ratio (as opposed to a set of eight if you were racing various tracks), which is a set of three gears, a lightweight magnesium housing, and all assorted spacers, bearings and nuts to do the install.

Cost is $3,799. Please email me (or call) for ordering, shipping and delivery details.

I would enjoy offering a substatial discount for a group order. Five kits saves $300 each, 10 kits saves $800'

    Best regards,

    Rob

    Maui, Hi
    Where does this housing go?
There is not much space over there, and it cant go any lower or it will scrape on the ground.
Do you have any fotos to enlighten us?
Thanks for not forgetting about us.

Mrfotos, the 18 look fab, did you do any suspension mods, I also noticed that
discs and calipers are diffrent too?. do the 18's slow the acceleration?
finally are there any clearance problems?.
    stas.

This is interesting because in my 77 I am looking for more top end. Even driving sedately keeping up with Atlanta traffic I still constantly hit the rev limiter in 1st and 2nd and at 90 it revs way to high for me. As a matter of interest do you guys go much above 100 at all? I have hit the cut out in 4th lots of times and it doesn't seem that fast, there is no way I can imagine the cut out in 5th being 150 more like 125 or so. I am running 16 inch rims so maybe that is having an effect?

These gears use straight-cut teeth. They must be horribly loud and whinning...

Sweet for the track. I assume pretty hard on the ears on the street after an hour of highway driving. Paul?

Let's put it this way between the Borla and straight cut gears you will never sneak up on anyone or for that matter sneak away.

At 40 mph's the gears are like twin superchargers running at 10,000 rpm's it gets quieter around 100 mph. So I just go faster.

Forgive me if I'm out on a limb here. My motor is out and I dont know how much room we have on that side, but what about a two speed gear train you could shift manually under the hood to choose from "road or track"? If there was room to extend an outer gear set far enough for a sliding coupler at the top gear to engage inner, or outer set, you could have the best of both worlds.

That is what I'd like to have, nice quite helical gears so the engine drone isn't replaced with gear whine.

Then you need to cut your own gears and get yourself a big cascade gear cover as per Michelotto cars. All parts can still be sourced in Europe, either original or replicas. You should count around 1000$ for the cover and the same amount per gear, total cost 5000$. Each alternative ratio will set you back another 4000$. They can be changed in less than 30 minutes by anyone and will give a top speed from 100mph (with hellish acceleration) to 160mph or anything you want.

Yeah, it’s a lot of work, and it hasn’t made the top of the list yet. I looked at is briefly and I’m pretty sure I can just buy pre-cut gear blanks, machine them to fit and send them out to be hardened. If it can be done this way, I think blanks are under $200 each plus about 2 hours of shop time and heat-treat, so maybe $1000-$1500 for the set. The cover can be machined from billet for $500-$1000. Prices would be less if more than one set are being made…..I’ll have a proper workshop in a couple months, so this might be my winter project.
