The NY Jets played in the first MNF game 36 years ago. They lost, 31-21. They also played the last game tonight. They lost, 31-21. I used to be a fairly competent actuary before I retired. But I couldn't imagine the probabilities of that coincidence.
Monday Night Football was a kind-of uneventful this year, played mostly by teams with losing records. A little unfortunate--but hey, its football! Cant wait for the playoffs! There were some good games however (example: the Broncos taking it to the Cheifs 30-10!)
It IS NOT the final Monday night game. ESPN will broadcast Monday night games for the 2006 NFL season.
FINAL? Jeez, I gotta start watching the news again. I think this would definitely be classified as 'ghey'!
Jets were a playoff team in 2004, and before the season were expected to contend with the Pats for the AFC East title. I suspect when the schedules were set the thought was that this game could be a decisive one. I don't believe they were trying to include the Jets to match up with their appearance in the first MNF game. (Otherwise, a game with Cleveland would have been perfect "symmetry" ... and also, perfectly useless.)
Incidentally, it is my understanding that next year, there will be the flexibility to change the late-season Monday (and perhaps also Sunday) night matchups to put games between contending teams in the prime time slots. I don't know exactly how it would work, but it would avoid some of the loser games that Alex mentioned above.
