Hey for the first time the April 2012 Forza has decided to include the 365GT4, 400, 400i and 412 in their Market Report for "Classic Ferraris 12s". Price guide is about right- 400s $25K-$35K and 412s 30K-$40K.

They car they used for their owners report was not a 330 but our very own "SouthJersey400i" Ken Battles lovely car. Ken said all the right things about these cars as well. Way to represent Ken!

They sort of got the overview wrong again- They mentioned the major issues as electrical and cracked oil coolers, (Not one of the top 5 as far as I know) and then mentioned that low values lead to deferred maintenance. The reality is the low values lead to deferred maintenance lead to the typical 400/412 problems. Get a good car and drive it regularly and they are surprisingly reliable.

But this is the beginning of the slow climb for these cars from the utter doghouse to just the tiniest glimmer of respectability... Who can remember when "Queen Mothers' were $20k cars??

Hopefully this will increase the values a bit (Copyright 2005 Brettski) for us owners.

Not only that, the bullet points to promote sales of the April 2012 issue, on the magazine's Back Issues web page, include this one: "V12 Ferraris starting at $25,000!" http://www.forza-mag.com/back-issues . They'll be flying off the newsstands.

When we talked about the issue about the Twin Turbo Norwood Convertible, somebody said it will have a 400 in a next issue. Is that this april issue ? In my souvenir it should be 400iguy's car, no ?

    Wow nice catch!

You know, I always wonder what happens to the videos those guys shoot out their windows- I never thought to search for them...412 looks nice there! That's downtown Hopkinton MA- I use the 400i and 412 as daily drivers in the nice weather- probably coming back from the bank or something-

These cars run better if you put your foot to the floor EVERY TIME you drive them!

85 by Colellas. Drive it all the time when going to Milford to see the folks. I found 4 or 5 videos on youtube of my 308 from Tutto this year.

1st car is me with my dad behind the wheel.

Anyway, back to the original post. So what does a well sorted out 400i go for these days?I don't know much about the series but I know that I like them, I see maybe 1 a year and I make OEM fuel line clips for them.

Well there's "Well Sorted" and there's "Really nice" and then there's "Perfect". Question is whether you can afford to handle anything less than Perfect. There's maybe a $5-$7K price swing between good and great on these cars, yet the cost to bring a good car up to great standards can hit $50K. (Paint, leather, bushings, tires, electrical... god forbid yo uneed to reseal the engine... which is a sore spot on the 70s V12s)

Personally I would only look for a car with an absolutely perfect body, absolutely perfect interior, complete and verifiable history of service and perfect glass and marker lights- The cost to repair any of those items is multi-thousands and adds nothing to resale value.

Average neglected cars with worn leather, scratched and dented body panels, cracked turn signal lenses and old rock hard TRX tires are $20K for auto, $23-25K for 5 speed. Really nice cars with glossy paint, worn but presentable leather and old tires are $25K for auto and $27-28K for 5 speed. Super nice clean cars with reams of service history, nice paint, spotless interiors are $30K-ish cars.

My 400i has rebuilt engine, trans, clutch (5 speed), glass-out body restoration, completely restored interior with everything new, new bushings, rebuilt shocks, new TRX, rebuilt steering rack, new rear glass and much more- and was for sale for over one year and I eventually bought it for $30K. But as with anything 400, I've invested a bunch more to sort out some seemingly small running issues.

But for me I think it's the buy of the century- and I still can't believe all the people who passed on this car. The real secret is... The auto trans is overall a more pleasant car to live with- just suits the car and never breaks. The 5 speed has the Daytona style LONG clutch throw- I'm 6'3" and I have to stretch out to get the pedal to the firewall. 5 speed of course a bit more fun to toss about and faster off the line, but I really like driving the 412 with the auto.

I was going to wait another day or two to tell this forum my car was in the "next" issue of Forza. I guess it is available on-line sooner than "on sale" date. I was told it was coming out Feb. 2. I have been promised a glossy version of magazine when it comes out. I have not yet seen the finished article so if you can post a link I can finally see it.

I was pleasantly surprised to see you and the car in the magazine.

I certainly never get anything but lots of "WOW"s when I'm driving around in either of mine- so nice to see the Ferrari mags starting to pay a little attention.

Perhaps I am a bit jaundiced, but I find this ariticle a case of "Damnation With Faint Praise".. on the other hand there are some who believe that as long as you spell the name right, anything in the media is a good thing. I know that if this article were the only thing that I knew about these cars I would stay far away.

I say this from the position of having restored my first car well over 50 years ago and am not yet "cured". Marc

Why do your rear fog lights function as brake lights?

One of my first stories for Forza was on V12 2+2's. Ever since, I have had a soft spot in my heart for them. I have driven just about all of the different models except for a "Queen Mother". But I really like the 400 series cars - something about the styling speaks to me!

The owner of the Prince Bernard 2+2 in issue 116 said it best - the 12 cyl 2+2s are Enzo's gift to the Ferrari world. I agree.

I'll keep pitching 2+2 articles to my editor - I think I've done 5 so far and I know there are a lot of interesting cars out there.

Wow, that is strange. What market were your cars built for?

The rear fog lights (inset in the rear bumper on the 400i, hanging below the bumper on the 412) are turned on by the yellow switch next to the emergency flashers switch. They only go on if the parking or headlights are on.

I have heard, although rare, that these rear fogs were connected to the brake lights when federalized. Supposedly, the rear fogs are DOT illegal for use as intended in Europe because it gives the drivers behind the impression that the car is braking. Can't remember for the life of me where I sourced it.

My Mercedes wagon has rear fog lights (so does yours, Jay! - you pull the headlamp switch to the second detent), as did my previous one. In Europe, you are supposed to use the fog lights only when it is foggy, because using them when it is not can obscure the brake lights, especially if it is raining.

I suppose anything is possible especially when the loony gray market federalization laws were at their height in the 1980's.

Nowadays lots of cars have rear fog lights, including Audi and Mercedes.
