Well, after watching Magnum PI religiously as a kid and then in later years trolling the internet for countless 328's and of course lurking here, I finally bought one on eBay, sight unseen! 1986 GTS with 50K miles here in Toronto. I had it inspected and appraised after buying it - I know, that's not the way to do it - but it turns out to be a very straight and very well maintained car with records straight back to the window sticker (originally a Texas car).

I've owned a lot of different cars over the years - a Europa, Spitfire, Corvette, 911, Cayenne Turbo, RX7, several old Mustangs and even a Citroen! I've even driven a few newer Ferrari like the 550 and 360. I always secretly believed the 328 would be a wonderful car to wax and admire but would have dated performance and ultimately be a bit tiresome to drive. Yet I wanted one.

I couldn't have been more wrong! What a fantastic car! I was immediately surprised at how quick and comfortable the 328 is to drive. It's the quintessential sports car. One of the best sports cars I've ever driven, including the newer stuff.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here but for those of you lurking and dreaming - go for it. It's better than what you're expecting - like you've dreamed it would be like!

I just had an 86 sold on me that I was going to see next week. So I'm still looking. Your post made me feel better and inspired me to continue. Thanks and here's to many happy, safe, loud rev'ing miles!

Thanks guys. It's funny how until you own one you feel a little sheepish about getting involved and posting. It's silly really when we're all enthusiasts. I look forward to sharing my experiences with it on here though.

    Cheers!

Congrats...having total strangers wave and give you a big thumbs is almost as much fun as running to redline through the gears on the on-ramp!

Thats the great thing about the 328. Its a car you long for ever since the Magnum 308 days because it is such a beautiful car and then when you drive it you realise that its by no means just a great looking car, its also a fantastic drive!

Awesome, another person just like me!

I am in South Africa and have been looking around for a good 308 or 328 for some time, as I too have dreamt of owning one since I was 10 years old. There are a number around at specialist dealers here, but I think generally overpriced. An '86 328 goes for around R650 000 here (approx $93 000), a '81 308 for about R400 000 ($57000). A '84 Mondial QV can be had for about R250 000 ($36000) which is more reasonable....but I want a 308/328

Also, in SA there is not a great support network and parts availability the way I understand it is limited. Most stuff has to be imported and one would probably have to go to a specialist dealer for services etc, so maintenance costs are also going to be high.

One of the biggest concerns I have had is that once I get the car, I may be dissapointed. You know what they say about being careful what you wish for. I guess its all about what your expectations are of a car like this. I know my Audi S4 wil run rings around it (excuse the pun), but you dont buy a 308/328 for its performance. It good to hear from someone who has just done what I want to do who confirms that my dream can really be as good as I think it is.

It sounds like Ferrari ownership in SA is a little more challenging than here in NA but luckily the 328's are quite reliable!

Congrats on the new ride!! I love my '86 328 GTS. Same color combination as your car. Now, go out and drive it like you stole it! Assuming that's your son in the picture, I'm sure he's going to grow to love it as well. Teach him to appreciate how wonderful older cars can be, and then get a wrench in his hand and teach him how to fix them. Later in life, he'll thank you for it.

You know what's funny - I told the old guy I bought it off of that it was actually my first (actually sort of second) car and he said, yep it was everyone's first car!
