Just watching a show tonight about the Louvre. Very interesting stuff, mostly about how the organization "Friends of the Louvre" finds and purchases for the museum. I guess the term "barn finds" as we commonly use here applies to paintings too.

Jennie and I grew up in Salina, KS and a few years ago it was a big deal when the paintings of Birger Sandzen from the nearby town of Lindsborg started going up in value. Schools, libraries, churches, and private individuals were finding his paintings collecting dust on walls or in attics everywhere. I guess his paintings sell for the $10-50k range.

Really don't know if I'm asking anything, just starting a discussion on a field I know nothing about.

Does anyone own some special paintings they would like to share or any anecdotes about finding or dealing with fine paintings?

What is the best way to learn about all these artists just under the radar of the masses and how to value their works? Is www.artprices.com the best online resource for art values? I see they require a subscription.

My favorite painting transaction story, mainly because of the St. Louis connection.

If you think the collector car world is full of eccentric characters and bizarre moves, the art scene will blow your mind.

funny this came up... I think this is fairly safe to say as long as I don't give to many details. My grandmother recently showed me one of the many paintings she has in her house... the painting is not in the best of shape, it has minor holes and what not but overall the thing looks great. The thing that really made my mouth drop was the signature on the bottom, "Monet". We aren't sure if it is a real one or not, or if its just an incredible fake. Either way the painting is beautiful and is a great conversation piece. The reason we dont have someone take a look at the painting is because where she lives is fairly unsafe. She is worried that someone will get her address then try and steal it if it is real. Anyway thats my story, and one day I'll find out if its real or not. Either way I love the painting for what it is.

Is it coincidence that Rob starts this thread and tonight some dudes try to sell me some "art" out of the back of their SUV?

    I think not.
