It all started with one of the counter sunk steering wheel screws looking like it wasn't seated properly. Removing the wheel revealed the wheel was installed I suppose 60? degrees out as the "top" mark on the hub pointed to the drivers door (RHD). So I pulled the front wheels off to see how the tracking was setup and one wheel track arm adjustment were way different than the other, so I balanced up the adjustment (so the track arms have the same amount of thread used - just felt safer and logically correct). Of course I adjusted both the same to maintain the tracking which appears to be correct.

This then left the steering wheel hub off center even more, so I loosened the steering UJ's under the dash and was able to pull the coupling off the spline nearest the wheel, turn the wheel back to center (with the steering wheels pointing straight as I could tell of course) then recouple the UJ.

So now the real question, assuming I'm less than a spline out with the steering wheel alignment I figure the only way to get absolute alignment now is to adjust the steering control arms, but how much. So has anyone calculated how much say one turn on the steering arms from the rack turns the steering wheel ? i'e by how many degrees. I guess I could just trial and error, as you can get to the steering arms without even jacking the car, but just wondered. i.e does one turn equal say 5 degrees with a standard rack?

    thanks

I guess you just have to try. If the rubber gaitors aren't on to tight, you can loose the lock nut on the track rod and turn the rod without loosening the track rod end.
But first make sure you rack is in the middle, that can you turn the steering wheel from straight the same amount of revolutions to the left as to the right (about 1 3/4).

Yeah, the rubber gaiters are free enough to allow me to adjust the positions easily and it takes just a couple of minutes.

I'll test the lock-to-lock tomorrow, but now at least the wheel is about centered and the track rod arms are pretty much equal in terms of amount of thread visible past the nut - a simple test I guess and not guaranteed to be accurate as I guess the rack could have been off at some point and re-connected off center a little.

Just being a perfectionist :) - and fixing PO's nonsense.
