I did a search looking for help in making a bracket for my fire extinguisher and found some very good designs for track mounted brackets. Mention was made of seat mounted brackets but no plans. I just decided to make my own and it works very satisfactorily. It's made out of materials purchased at the local building supply store for less than $15. I offer the plans here so anyone can make one. Open the Copy of Fire Extinguisher Bracket at the bottom of this thread for materials and assembly instructions.

I still say that mounting between driver's door and seat is far superior to accessibility of a mount in front of the seat. Some have placed it in front of the passenger seat which is much worse. I posted pictures of mine many years ago together with diagrams of the mounting bracket...will see if they are still around.

The issue is getting to the extinguisher instantly. And expecially if you are outside the car which is more often the case. The side/door mount allows immediate access whereas the front mound requires ducking your head into the car. If you are seated you have to fish it out from your legs or get out first and duck back in head first. Not pretty.

I had to use mine once and I swear I had it in my hand and pin pulled in under a second reaching in from the open drivers window. Were it in front of the seat it would have taken me eons.

    The issue is immediate accessibility!

The above fire extinguisher bracket can be mounted on the driver side seat and quickly accessed through the window. More importantly this location has enough space to mount a 2.5 lb extinguisher. Several fire departments have told me 2.5 lb is the minimum they would carry for a car fire. Also I might suggest a practice "fire drill" once a month so retrieving the extinguisher would be second nature.

I read somewhere that extinguishers s/b stored vertically because the powder has a tendency to cake on the sides with time. It also said that Halon is corrosive and can corrode the end threads used when it is recharged. I asked a guy that has been in the business of recharging extinguishers for over 40 years. He said the powder style used to cake until they started charging them with nitrogen gas instead of ambient air. He also said that Halon is corrosive and that can't be stopped but since the gas can escape through the end "O" rings it is better to store Halon extinguishers horizontal because the liquid inside will now cover the "O" ring and slows down the loss of pressure. I don't know you might want to check it out.

Paul, I see your point, in a fire, speed is critically impt. if you could find and reference or repost your bracket, I would be most apprecaitive and it may save a life one day...

Has anyone tried running the hose of the extinguisher to to tubes directly into the engine compartment. Then if there is a fire, you could just pull the pin and bam instant fire out.

    Just a thought.
