I haven't had to use one, but I have purchased several, including a 100 second duration extinguisher for the garage.

My 458 and my Porsche Turbo both came with fire extinguishers inside on the floor. I have extinguishers in all the other cars I have also.

Search over at pelican - one member recently did a fairly sophisticated test and put the videos on the forum. If I remember correctly it failed....

Fireman told me 2.5 pound will just barely be adequate!

I just had to deal with an engine fire in my E34 BMW this weekend. I highly recommend the Element one--traditional will leave a huge mess, and will not last long enough (in car-friendly sizes anyways) to put out anything serious. $100 or so is chump change next to the value of your car, and, more importantly, potentially you and your family's lives.

I should get a few fire extinguishers myself.

So a long duration Element is the hot ticket? (sorry).

Thanks Mat for the feedback on the Element. Have not heard from anyone who has actually has to use one. So it worked great and not mess?

I have 50 second duration Element extinguishers for our cars, and the 100 second duration for my garage.

Sadly I had taken it out when I gutted the interior. The car was on a tow truck, off and the key in my pocket. I had to use a regular extinguisher, which worked, but definitely made a mess. It was a large 15kg one, which would not have fit in the car. I used almost all of it. A car-sized conventional extinguisher would not have sufficed.

Many years ago we sold Halon 1211 (not Halotron) at Ricambi America . We stopped, simply because of the shipping complexities with these canisters, but they came from a recycler, H3R Aviation . H3R was always super easy to work with, and delivered an extremely high quality product.

If the enviro concerns (and price) of Halon 1211 don't bother you, it is likely a superior product to Halotron --- but both will certainly extinguish a small fire when used properly.

IMHO. Better to have a great insurance policy rather than a great fire extinguisher. Insurance paid up? Let it burn. Buy another car. Gts Bruce

Since nobody else was kind enough to directly post a link to the independent test mentioned above (which I had to google, log in to Pelican, and find), here's the video mentioned:

p.s.? No skin in the game, but have been thinking of buying one. Video did not dissuade me, but didn't persuade me, either
