My oldest daughter calls me from college a few weeks ago and tells me her car is a little louder than usual. It's a near new Scion tC. Just a little bit louder, but "different".

So I ask her to look under the hood, see if anything is obviously wrong. She looked with a nice young man that happened to be from our town with whom she goes to college.

Nothing obvious, she checked the oil, all OK.

So, I thought well maybe its idling a little faster as its cold outside.

So she comes home last night, I take it to the garage to change the oil and rotate the tires this AM.

I drain the oil, change the filter, rotate the tires.

    Then I pop the hood.

    Oil grenade.

    Oil every where.

    No oil filler cap.

    Mystery solved.

Interestingly, she nor the young man noticed it missing.

Ah, and who was the moron that either forgot to put it on or left it loose?

That would be the idiot that last topped up the oil at Thanksgiving.

    That would be.....

    me.

Thanksgiving seems to be a long time ago for not noticing something was wrong..... You said that your daughter checked the oil, it was ok! Then she comes home and the filler cap is gone and the engine bay is splashed with oil!
Maybe the daughter of a moron is also a .......... moron? (No offence, rather joke!!!!)

Amazed that in a few weeks it didn't do more. I put the cap back on crooked after changing the oil in my first car and it was maybe 30 mins down the road when the oil level light came on. Oil everywhere.

Had to use a lot of Simple Green that day.

Place the cap in the same spot everytime you take it off. That will train you to look for it before you close the hood.

You know, like we train dogs..............

I always put it in a spot where the hood won't close if I forget it.

Reminds me of a time I saw a guy changing the oil and the old filter gasket stayed stuck to the attachment point...... of course two gaskets don't work very well and oil sprayed everywhere as soon as he started it up. As an observer it was pretty funny to see happen, I double check mine before putting the new filter on now :)

I did that too once. Even after a good cleaning I could smell the oil burning off for months.

I forgot to put the drain plug in once and poured 5 quarts of new oil into the drain pan. Luckily, I always check the level before starting it.

Weirdness. I was topping up my oil today and my filler cap slipped out of my butter-fingers when I was replacing it and disappeared into the engine bay. Had to take it into a nearby workshop so they could hoist it, open the oil pan and remove it.

Reminded me of this story, so I had to post. :D

See, thats the bonus thing of my parents 1998 intrepid. when you change the oil, it burns it but it leaks out fast enough that after maybe a week there is no oil to burn.

Isn't it amazing how often this happens?
Just happened to the GF a few weeks ago. She goes out of her way to take it to the Acura dealer to pay twice as much so it is "done right" and they left the cap off her TSX.

At least they replaced it and changed it again for free - and she knows where it is now.
