I know this is probably a rehash of some old news but can anyone give me a suggestion for a good firewall? I have a spam blocker, pop-up blocker and the rest but I am still getting inundated regularly with programs that come in on Microsoft explorer and try to attach themselves or download themselves on our computer. My wife thinks I am getting them off this site and has said that if I cannot get a good enough firewall to keep this nuisance stuff off the computer that I cannot get a kitchen pass to keep up with things here.

    Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Norton Anti-Virus 2004, you get free updates & great support. I got my copy a Sam's Club back in August.

Well, waddle on down to CompUSA or whatever and buy a DLink or a Linksys hardware firewall/router. You can also choose to install a software firewall like Zone Alarm.

    http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

    Also, download and use Firefox.
    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

You can use this very good browser for 95% of browsing. Since it does not support ActiveX, you are removing one layer of insecurity associated with IE.

Thanks, William. I will take a look. Also, Korr, I plan on going (waddling if you will) to a computer store on Monday. I will let you know how things go.

If most of the attacks are coming in on IE, then I'd strongly suggest using Firefox. IE has security holes you can drive a truck through.

At a minimum you should check windowsupdate.com for Win/IE security patches -- they have to release about three a week, it seems.

Also, if you want to stick with IE, go into your security settings and set them up in detail -- don't just set the "high/medium/low" slider. (If you go with Firefox, examine the settings, there, too. Never just accept the "default" settings.)

But absolutely install antivirus code. NAV (Corporate Edition) has caught a few loaded javascripts that the firewall passes through. (The firewall will stop some SMB attacks, but few can inspect java or js on a valid http channel.)

I used to be a firm supporter of Kerio Personal FW ("Tiny" Personal FW) until the latest version (4.x) caused me to lose my lunch. Bloated with a huge memory footprint, unstable, intrusive and full of useless "features" and bugs.

Get Kerio version 2.x and learn to configure the rules properly.

I second the recommendation of ZoneAlarm. It's free, and easy.

Well, I was getting sick of having issues with IE, (the thing is pure junk) & just downloaded FIREFOX for my new browser. So far It seems to be connecting faster than IE. I see how it goes.

I used to run ZoneAlarm but have switched over to the free version of Sygate and hardware firewall also.

I also use SYGATE. It's free, and works very well. Unless you start exploring links posted in some threads, this site does not generate any spyware or adware activity. Mind you, a firewall does not protect you from virusses coming in via your e-mail. You need an anti-virus program for that.
