On March 6, 2011, RM Auctions at their Ft. Lauderdale auction is selling a 2002, 575 Maranello with 7475 miles, part of the O'Quinn Collection [ whoever he is ], and not been driven recently and not much generally, and not recently serviced. I'm interested ! Being non-mechanical, and uninformed, I'm hoping some of you will offer me some advice. I did have a 1986 Testarossa from 2000-2005, did the belt for about $3K, and never had a stitch of trouble. It wasn't a "jump in your car to go to the store" though.
    My questions are:
    1. what questions should I be asking
    2. what money is it worth
    3. what kind of service should it have and at what cost
    4. do these cars have the overpriced belt changes in them that a Testarossa has
    5. are they good everyday drivers
    6. do they have an undersized clutch like the Testarossa
    7. what's your take on the F-1 transmission vs. the stick shift

I guess this is a good start. I live in Chatham, Ontario, home of RM Classic Cars & Auctions, so they did my Testarossa service for me instead of the Ferrari dealerships. I'd buy the oil, for example , locally for $4.00/litre, instead of $21.00/litre from the Ferrari dealership in Toronto. Weird. I never understood why the dealerships charged thousands of dollars [even tens of thousands ] to just service a Ferrari. It's not the space shuttle for crying out loud !
Thank you to any of you who respond to me.

The 575 is a fantastic car and worlds easier/more enjoyable to drive on a regular basis than the TR. It does have a timing belt service that is required but it doesn't involve pulling the engine so it's reasonable to pay for comparatively. The belt service on this car is about half of the TR (I assume the $3k number is CDN not USD?).

A good 575 is selling around $100k +/- depending on color, mileage, service history etc etc.

The clutch is still generally good for about 20k miles depending on driving habits which is common on most Ferraris.

There are a million opinions about F-1 vs. Manual gearboxes, the only thing really notable from my unbiased perspective is that the V12 F-1's drive much nicer than the V8's (ie 360 vs 575) how ever the system is much more complex and will require some extra maintenance.

You'll also want to do some poking around for a "buyer's guide" if you get real serious about the car. It will help answer a lot of basic questions and give you an idea where you're headed, after that first hand experience can really help you get confident in what you're looking at.

Its unlikely this car will be cheap so if you really want one do your research and buy at your leisure the right car with the right spec for your requirements

There are loads of threads here about 575 servicing etc & F1 transmissions = read them

I'm in Toronto. I used mine as a daily driver over the summer. I paid 95 US for a 2002 6 speed with Fiorano Pack and carbon fiber interior. It needed nothing except a power window switch and that's it. The board has a wealth of communal knowledge and the search function was very valuable when I was researching my purchase.
    good luck

Thank you to those people who offered advice. I'm reading through the various threads and learning a ton of good information. The car I'm looking at can be seen on RM's website for the Lauderdale Auction. It appears that there are various opinions as to the maintenance support needed for the 575 versus the 550, with the 550 requiring less. And as expected, some like to shift gears, and some prefer the f-1 shift system.
Thanks Drabe for your thoughts. I wondered if there were many other Maranellos in Ontario. I'm lucky to be able to work around the maintenance issue by using RM's services and avoid the Ferrari dealerships.
Again, i thank the respondents and their opinions. This is a great forum.

I had an 04 575 with a 6 speed manual that I paid 90K USD in April/10. It needed a major service and a new water pump, gaskets and tires that put me up to 100K.

As you are aware, don't forget about the duty and GST which will add 11.1% and RIV compliance including acceptance of recall letter and daytime running lights.

It is my understanding that the 575 requires less maintenance than the 550 in that we have 5 year belt cycles and somewhat more reliable shocks. Sit tight until Taz chimes in. I would think that if the maintenance issue was questionable then it may be prudent to do the belts.

Abe- Nope, not me. Bruce needs to do some reading and research and then we start answering questions.

This was just in relation to whether 550s are less maintenance heavy than 575s.

Bruce, I don't know much about RM auctions... but is the supposed auction discount big enough for you to jump in? Can you do a PPI with car, given it's being sold at an auction? Can you even take her out for a test spin?

Abe- The maintenance schedules on the 550 and 575M are virtually identical. The 550 will tend to need more unscheduled maintenance because the cars are anywhere from 1 1/2 - 9 years older (1st 550 in Summer 96, last 575M in Spring 05) and most 550 problem areas were fixed on the 575M.

Thanks Taz and Abe. I appreciate your comments. Further to Widdlewade query, yes, I can access the car and try it. As well, I know the RM folks well. I'm sure you've heard of RM as well, just never realized it. They recently sold the original James Bond Aston Martin in England. Check them out at www.rmauctions.com as they are all over America [ Ca, Fla, NY, Az, Mi,etc. ] , as well as Italy and England. They outsell Barrett-Jackson 50:1 annually. Sales over 400 mil !
