I have flown in coach class in Delta 777s with 2-5-2 seating, and in British 777s at 3-3-3, and I can tell you that Delta's setup is better. And the fact is, the highest point in the overhead ceiling was designed with 2-5-2 in mind, so it's in the wrong place for the aisle in the 3-3-3 airplane!

Motorcycles are a good analogy. They can be safe, or not, depending on the situation. If you have never been on a bike, take a few shots of whiskey, and launch off on a GSX-R 1100, that's not likely to have a good outcome.

If you do MSF training, never ride while drinking, and take other common sense precautions, then motorcycles are fairly safe.

Similarly, there is a vast difference in safety in different areas of general aviation. However, professional pilots with regular simulator (or comparable) training flying turbine powered equipment are very safe. Not far at all from the airlines from a safety record point of view.
