... first of many. This was my first time out on track in the CS. I have about 15 days on track in a modified B6 Audi S4, so I'm still learning but can carve on smooth line with ok speed. Needless to say, it was night and day... Audi let me get away with alot.

I went out to Reno-Fernley Raceway with along side a tuned RS6, race ready ZO4, and a Radical and no one else. Ran the 2.1 mile high horsepower config... 4.3 mile road course should open up towards end of November. It will have over 40 turns in 4.3 miles and tons of elevation. Its going to be huge for all you Northern Nevadians and Northern Californians... no more learning the line on 15 turns in a hour then ripping.

Anyhow, car was great. I tried to pull one Audi manuever (late apex in a 90 degree left, heavy throttle, keep the car from drifting to the outside of the turn out and then it bucked me pretty good then spun me around twice rather quickly... good things to learn on a empty track. F1 trans was amazing, stock tires were amazingly good, braking was insane (once they warmed up... no brakes when cold).

The car demands a lot of respect and will take a while for me to learn to drive it properly. Missing an apex and heavy throttle do not go well together in this car... it really needs to hit the apex well then you can apply a large amount of throttle on the drift to the turn out (on most types of corners). I was amazed how well it handled when you turn it correctly. Now I just need to figure out how to measure gas levels effectivly as the stock gas guage and floater is next to useless when on track.

I'll be posting in the Nor Cal forum future private track events we pull together. It would be fun to have more Ferrari's playing out there... once I get a little more track time and keep the back end in place :)

Marshall, excellent post. That track is a hike for me but with friends like Mike and Chris in Reno, it will be worth the trip. I have heard good things about it, so look forward to it. Any pics of your car? Will you take me for some laps if we get there on the same date?
    Enjoy, JOhn

    Marshall,

Good on ya for putting the CS on a track, as it was meant. Great write up. I hope to have my own CS track write up soon as well!

Question: How was the front/rear bias handling? Was your braking straight line, or did you have a chance to brake into a corner while entering the corner in a curve? Just curious as to how the CS reacts in spin-producing scenarios.

    Marshall,

When was this track completed? I am in Reno a lot and glad to see such a facility. I am eager to hear more observations about the CS on the track.

i have a 95 spider that i track few times year and brand new audi s4 with tip that i just took on track last month. the paddles and stability control were like night and day compared to fcar. made it so much easier to go quickly. however, not quite the same satisfaction as heel/toe, counter steer, etc either.

what is traction control on cs like?

I'll respond to the above questions ins one post rather than quote them all...

riverflyer, no pics of the car on track, only at the dealership...I left work mid day, grabbed then pili's and helmet and blasted out to Fernley and forgot a camera. I have a vid camera mount for the inside but need to figure out how to mount. Pics on track will come in time!

CodeRed, yeah, the lack of AWD had my blood pumping good even before I exited pit lane! CS demands muhc more respect form the driver than the Audi (but I still love the Audi too!)

Motion, Thanks for the note and I hope you cna get one soon! Well worth it!In regards to the front/rear bias under braking, I did feel some funky feelings I need to be mindful of... mainly, if I was exiting a left hand turn A and kept a nice steady arc on the tunr out to a right hand corner b and still had a tiny bit of steering input and then threshold braked, the back end of the car would kick out to drivers right... when I want to turn drivers right. FWD cars would be much more tolerant of such poor behaviour! :) I felt its heavier butt end weight forced me to set up for turns better.

Derek A: The 2/1 mile road course has been around for a while. Paving was just completed earlier this month on the 4.3 mile road course. They were still putting in concrete bumpers on Tuesday. Its worth the drive to Fernley to checkout... and if you have your car, to hop on. I cna fill you in on how to get a track permit so you can show up for test and tunes and drive on the cheap.

95Spiderman: Are you on Audiworld forums at all? I'll be at Infineon w/ Audi Club in Sonoma Ca next week with the S4... if you are in CA, come on by! I had a Tip but then sold it and got a manual as I was tracking alot.... if it was not getting tracked I would have kept the tip for street driving. The traction control on the CS was very different from the ESP on the Audi... I was running in race mode and in lets you hang it out quite a bit (or in my case, spin). I did not disable the ASR on track yet. Next trip perhaps! While I love the F1 trans and could never shift as fast as it... I do kinda miss the manual input a manual car provides... but... not enough to dislike the F1.

Anyhow, thanks for all your comments! Next time I'll snap some pics!

my mechanic has figured out that the bushes in the control arms are probably made of rubber as my CS has mass oversteer. when i turn into a corner and try to apply any weight to the outside of the car , my rear wheels go from toe in to toe out and it's a real handfull. we pulled the arms off the car and could move them while in a vice due to the flex the bushes had . we have priced challenge bushes but they are too expensive so we will machine some up for half the price. it's very disappointing for this car to have such an inferior part. i dialled 10 mm of toe in on the rear today for a track day to try and compensate the rear wheels from going to toe out and it was an improvement as the rears probably came back to neutral toe. can other CS owners add further to this?

Scud, your car has N-GT sachs adjustable shocks right?? Your set up problems would be confusing to people with std cars.

I doubt the expense to change to nylon 360C style bushes will fix your problem. You need Corsa (not system) tyres, and a development session with pro driver, and you'll be fine.
