OK. I have made a deal on my first Fcar - pending a successful PPI. I have a couple questions for the assembled intellect of FChat. I already searched and found no similar thread - sorry if I missed something.

    1. Should I be present for the PPI? I want to be but am not sure the folks doing it would aprreciate it or allow me to observe closely and ask questions, etc.? I am going to use a well known independent service shop for the PPI.

    2. Who do you guys insure your cars with? Your normal insurance provider under an agreed value policy or do most of you use a specialty vendor? Have you found one specialty vendor that is beter than others w.r.t. Fcars?

    Thanks.

as for as PPI, most would not care if you were present, as long as your not in the way, it could be a good way to learn something about your car too.

about 50/50 on special insurance vendors.

I have used Hagerty serveral here have they are FIRST CLASS all the way but, are a little pricey.

you can always type Inusrance, in the search here and gets TONS of info.

    what car ?

First of all, congrats on your new F-car!!

Depending on how in-depth PPI you request, It could take 6-7 hours. I am quite sure the shop would not want you around for that long :)

The shop should however, be willing to call you when they are almost done and go over everything with you while the car is still in the air.

As far as insurance, I am insured with Farmers for both the Diablo (normal policy) and the 308 (stated value policy). I think the 308 is actually underwritten by a classic car compant like Hagarty, but thru farmers.

I am buying an 88.5 TR. I have wanted a TR since the first day I saw a picture of one. I have done a lot of research and looked at and driven several cars this summer before finding this one. It does not have a lot of documentation besides what the current owner has done (including a major). Hence I will be doing a thorough PPI. I do not expect any major problems to be found and am certainly hoping against it.

Perry - as noted, I did do a search and looked through all 250 topics but did not find a similar thread on "insurance". Lots of uses of the word insurance but not how I wanted. Of course after the first 169 I may have missed something...

I have had numerous PPIs done in the past, many with mechanics I know (or got to know). I was often present during the entire PPI, and have found it enlightening almost every time. The biggest issues occur when the shop is really busy (like Black Forrest in San Diego for Pcars) and you just didn't know when they were going to do their thing. With bigger independents you can definitely be in the way, and there can be insurance issues with you on the shop floor. Most smaller shops don't care.

first of all, major congrats on your first fcar. A very special day!

Typical of the whitebread insurance policies in place so many shops have problems with customers in the workbays. Personally, I would find a shop that would allow me in to see whats going on. If they can, most guys will point things out and share opinions with you, which is invaluable.
Also, seeing the car on the lift and examining susp., belly pan, general frame condition can be super helpful and unless you have a lift yourself, it may be awhile before you can really see the underside easily.

My experience with ppi's would reccommend your being present as much as you have time for, or at least scheduling to come in while the car is on the rack so you can personally inspect it.

first, congrats on the TR, it is a great car. i have a 1990. i have mine insured with an agreed value policy, but before that i had a normal policy with USAA. currently with american collectors. if you can live with the driving restrictions of a classic car policy, i would go for it because agreed value is a lot better than normal policy for these older cars.

Nice to see someone jumping in with both feet. No 308/328/348 starter for you. Congrats on the TR! I would not worry about being there for a PPI unless it was local I would go for the educational factor. Don't get too emotional about the results. I have my insurance with Allstate with no restrictions. Good luck!

I have tried to buy a 308 from a friend of a friend a couple times that says he wants to sell it, never drives it, etc. But when pushed he never followed through. Shame too, as it would have been a great deal. I would still buy if it comes up.

Ah, the ultimate fantasy for a mere mortal like me: "Honey, let's take the Ferrari to dinner tonight." "OK", he replies with a knowing smile, "which one?"

On agreed value policies that you guys/gals have on older Fcars, do you state purchase price, market price, or "hoped for price" in the event of a claim?

Thanks for all the replies thus far.

    NNO,

I will be happy to get diarhea of the fingers and tell everyone about my new obsession once the deal is done. I have seen one too many PPIs take deals down in flames on this board. So I do not want to jinx anything.

I don't know if Norton will protect me from that...

You can PM it to me if you'd like, I just want to see what, if any, history we have on the car and let you know. Otherwise, good luck and keep us posted - and when all is said and done, post plenty of pictures...!

This is another vote for being present at the PPI if at all possible. It is amazing what you can learn in general about your car and you also get to see first hand everything as it is checked out.

    Good luck!
