Hey guys, My father just purchased a 02 360 and I am in charge of picking it up and more than likely take care of it.

So I have heard if you put the car in reverse incorrectly you will damage the transmission and will cost close to $3k to fix....

Do you guys have any tips/ Tricks for not destroying the car before i get it home??

Also I run by the hot rod shop every other week to pick up gas for my 1964 Dodge Polara, Should I pick up gas for the Ferrari as well (unleaded) as we only have 91 max here in California....

    Thanks everyone!

    Ryan

I think what Paul is inferring is that your questions are a little "elementary." There are no tricks and tips to driving a car, putting it in reverse, using a higher than 91 octane gas, etc. The only thing significantly different might be the F1 paddles, however, it's not rocket science and many modern cars now have paddles or buttons to mimick the F1 transmission. It's a Ferrari so respect its power and drive safely. That's about it.

Thank you for the response. I understad the power and repecting the power, This is not the first high powered/ Fast car i would be driving.

I was warned about the reverse issue, thats why I ask if there are any other things (tips/ Tricks) I/ WE should know about. I guess im being too safe....

Also the gas question... Better gas might help prolong the life of the motor/ Maybe it will like it better than the 91 we have here

Socal, the reverse mis-uderstanding is because the car never really engages fully, hence slipping the clutch. So in other words no long reverse and definitely no uphill in reverse.

Guys it was a perfectly reasonable question, not sure why the hard time.

I'm picking up my first F1 car next week and I'm also wondering about the reversing issues, the nuetral or not when stationary question, whether or not to lift when changing gear and the general perception of clutch fragility if you believe everything you read here.

It doesn't make me young or inexperienced to have these questions; I'm over 40 and this will be my third F-car, I've just not enountered F1 before and neither has the OP.

    Ryan,
Nothing can damage the transmission of a Ferrari ! The clutch may be ... When you shift into reverse make sure the R appears on the dashboard, if not, shift to first gear then try the Reverse again. The rest is just practice... you need to drive the car and learn the F1 shifting by practice... Do not drive the car without the ASR as it may go out of control if you do not have the experience yet. Make sure the car gets 3 to 4 minutes warming up before driving, and the oil should be warm before starting to push the car... the rest is like any other car. congrats!

Just about the only thing Rifledriver told me when I picked mine up was to be "careful" putting the top up & down:

    - Car parked, handbrake on, windows up, engine running. In neutral (!)
    - Hit the button and magic happens. Do not release the button until the windows have wound themselves back up again and the "beep-beep" has sounded.
    - Same procedure whether it's going up or down of course.

I've never "dared" try it, but apparently the electrons can get confused if you stop in the middle of the sequence with the somewhat embarrassing result of a stuck top.....

    One other thing - Enjoy!

    Cheers,
    Ian

The damage that they may have been referring is to the "T" handle that puts the car in reverse. You need to slightly lift up and pull back. If you just pull back you will brake the lock out and to replace the reverse selector will run about 3K although Ricambi has a new handle for about $ 200.00.

    I respectfully disagree.

To the OP: Enjoy the car. Drive it lots.... it will reward you with lower maintenance bills.

Thank you for the helpful responses!
and yes post #52 helped very much!!

I think it goes without saying that people should respond to a post if they have something to add to the question or point to be made. If you have nothing to add please do not reply or post on my questions.

I'm not a child and do not plan on acting like one.

Thank you again to everyone that is helping me out on not destroying something so beautiful!

Ok, so it was a "simple" question...NO ONE deserves this CRAP. Higher education does not always equate to having manners and common sense. At least he isn't too cheap to subscribe to the forum.

WELCOME sir, you will find most people here to be more hospitable. As a new owner, I suggest you use the search function before you ask your questions - many of which have been asked and answered for new owners. There is a wealth of information here for you.

this would be a much more helpful thread if folks got off their cavalinni... I'm glad the thread was posted. a good opportunity for newbie questions - like....

can anybody explain how to check the fluid level for the spider top? Is it behind the passenger seat? I understand that leakage is a potential problem with these cars - can anybody elaborate?

Or - if you prefer - flame away!
