I have never owned an exotic car and I am looking forward to purchasing one in the near future. I was thinking about starting off with a used mid-engine like a 360 or 430. What are some important considerations/things to avoid i.e. mileage, dealer vs private party, start with a porsche before a Ferrari, etc...... I would appreciate any newbie advice from the experts.

I bought a new Porsche 911 Turbo ( in 2007) and loved it. Then, I bought an F430 and realized that there is a different world out there, Ferrari. The Porsche is a great car, but the 911 has a well understood and historical design flaw (engine over rear axle). I have since sold my 911 Turbo. If you want an overpowered "road car" you'll be happy with a 911 Turbo. If you want to enter a truly different world, enter the Ferrari market with an 2004 360 or an 05 430. You can't go wrong if you buy the most car (Ferrari) that you can afford.

I would buy an 03 or 04 360 before I would buy an 07-09 911. If you do buy a Porsche, you'll be happy, just don't get behind the wheel of a Ferrari, because you'll have a "For Sale" sign on the Porsche the minute you do.

Well put. I had an 05 911 TT~S with about 500hp with exhaust installed. But, after driving the 360 after Capristo Level 3 exhaust and lowering 1" and tightening up the suspension a touch, can't beat it. Yes less HP but drivability is a very good progression. Be aware of the oversteer, throttle and touch of steering. Great cars!!!

There's a sticky thread at the top of this forum which details many considerations when buying a used Ferrari.

    Check it out...
