I just purchase my first Ferrari. Its a 1971 246 gt red/ black 44km euro model Records dating back to 1980. It has been a dream come true! I want to do so many things to my dino and enjoy it for a long time to come. I would like to make so many improvements, but of course my wallet dictates when things can get done. It could use a new column switch which I was able to source online for 1,300. Pricey unit. Would you recommend putting more money into the engine or to body and cosmetic details ( ie new tires, braided brake lines, new brakes, replacing hoses, etc.. What are your opinions on getting an electronic management system? This should give me some more power on the low end and provide more reliability. Has this been a popular add-on with vintage ferraris? http://www.dinoparts.de/EN/ferrari-246-gt-gts/engine/performance-parts/high-performance-engine-management-system-4019.html If I do the electronic management system, would I need this Electronic distributor as well? http://www.dinoparts.de/EN/ferrari-246-gt-gts/ignition/fully-electronic-distributor-with-coilplug-lead-set.html Can anyone recommend a good shop in Santa Monica are of Los Angeles ? Lastly, does anyone know a good seat upholsterer that can redo my seats in leather in the Santa Monica Los Angeles area? Thank in advance for all future feedback. This is a great online community full of knowledgeable enthusiasts.
Whoa! First and foremost Steve a very warm welcome to you. Rules here are, you must show us some pics of your car before we will even begin to communicate with you.....Only joking . Tony L and myself both have the BSM (Black Stallion Motors) ignition system from Australia via Superformance in the UK....I think its around £1400 but extremely good. Tony L will tell you more than me due to the fact that A) I have only done 225 miles with mine and B) I havent driven the car on any other system. Lots of VERY knowledgable folk on here (more than me!) So fire away. Photos first of course!!!! Regards, Graham.
WELCOME! It is great to see someone who went out and actually bought a car, rather than someone who just trolled around in here. Post pics soon! Mark
You lucky man... You have many years of passion, enjoyment, and discovery ahead of you. Enjoy it and welcome! P.S. You just bought the most adorable car ever made.
To answere your questions: If you buy the electronic management system then you don´t need the electronic distributor. The system works without the distributor as in modern cars. There is a kind of a small flywheel which has to be fitted on the crankshaft pulley which gives via magnetic sensor the ECU the engine timing information when to initiate the sparks. It is the same concept as the ABS works. I can tell you in a few weeks my experience because I´m just doing a comaprison between a similar system and the Dinoplex in my 246. Regards Nicolai
